What does Butch do?

We're gonna find out whether that experiment worked out very soon...imo.

Absolutely. And maybe Jones did tell him he can't. But Shoop was in VERY high demand and could require pretty much anything he wanted. He didn't need the job

Which is why he's getting paid what he's being paid obviously.

Appreciate the dialog. :hi:

Absolutely, same to you.

There's no doubt when he has a full compliment of players his schemes work very well.
My question with Shoop is how he adapts his philosophy with a big slew of injuries. Granted the sheer number we had would impact any DC in the nation. You can't lose your DT's, best LB and DB (also team leaders who make the calls on the field) and not have a major hit to your ability to be efficient on defense. But I was surprised at just how much we struggled.

Edit to say this.
I think the offensive game plan should've been changed to match the depleted defense as well IMO. Now we don't know how much the injuroes on offense hurt our ability to change offensive efficiency either.
The entire thing was disheartening to see fall apart due primarily to injuries.

I watched it . Love that 3-3 look ...that became a 4-2 . I like how it changed pre-snap. Not sure why we are not doing those things . It couldn't hurt. Have enjoyed it . Message any time ...love to talk football with folks without bickering

Stupid phone.

How do you know Shoop doesn't have full control?
I don't know for sure, but that staff was the same staff as before. So at his salary, he should be given full control to make changes as he sees necessary and run it the way he wants or send him on his way and bring in a Jones' puppet at half the cost.

So you don't know but you'll make that assumption.

I appreciate the input.. I would like to know your prognosis for UT's defense to get to maximum potential. the way you've explained that middle push applying the needed pressure I get the feeling that UT won't be where they need to be to compete on a high level for 2 more seasons and then I get confused hearing that Saban wants to go with leaner tackles. I can see leaner faster DT's handling the spread offenses and up tempo offenses better but not getting that much needed interior push because they aren't big enough. I even heard that the bigger fellows tire more from running on and off the field than they do by lining up and playing some downs. Has the game gotten this scientific? What's your spin on that? Thanks for any response.

Sorry I am a little late getting back to you on this. I am a little more optimistic on the defense ( I really have some sore issues with the offense and the lack of adjustments to the players skill sets ...different story ) I am not a 'nega' and not a sunshine pumper just a realist.

I dont think Shoop donned orange and suddenly went from brilliant to stupid. I think the injuries to the front had everything to do with it. Vandys QB for instance has 3.5 to 4.5 seconds to deliver the ball . No pressure when he released the ball , he let it go when he wanted to. The secondary looks terrible because the QB has no pressure and just about any JUCO QB can throw a passing tree with no pressure!

Shoops defense is a bit different personnel wise, more so than most think . What he means by 'leaner' tackles doesnt necessarily mean smaller in the sense of 260 lbs. I think he means 290 , 300 lb kids that are more fast twitch and active as opposed to a 330lb kid or even a portly 300 lb guy. He doesn't want guys that attack , bullrush and occupy blockers. He wants guys that attack gaps. To get to the gaps a guy has to be fast off the ball and not lumbering. It is a valid approach. This is single gap defense. The interior guys hit the A & B gap and the other guys in the front have other gap responsibilities.

So we have been horrible in the interior gaps since injury hit us big . They get guys healthy and by recruiting and pumping some guys up via S&C ( another issue ) they will do fine with the interior. The LBs can get to be free flowing and get their nose out of the gaps and can got to their second key , and if the corners and safeties get to play zone ( part of Shoops approach ) and the QBs dont have 4 seconds ...put 2.5 seconds ...they will look great . Once he gets the interior gaps under control Shoop brings magic with exotic blitz and zones and the guy literally plays chess on the field .

Hope that helps. Thanks for the great dialogue !!

In one of the other threads VFL34 stated that Shoop wasn't allowed to bring his guys and that there was some philosophy differences with the current staff.

If anyone would have some insight inot what's going on I think it would be be him.

Well said ...especially the part about the offensive pace helping to cause 930 defensive snaps. Gotta keep that decimated defense off the field
