Von Pearson Update

If he's not back by the end of the week, I don't think he will be back. This is getting to be utterly ridiculous now.

Not only is Von not playing this year but he's not even allowed at school. He "might" be able to enroll again in January.

Wow!

I hope his accuser enjoys the very heavy dose of Karma coming her way.

This attitude is what Title IX is designed to prevent. This creates a hostile environment and is why Title IX exists.

How many points is Pearson worth per game? I say 3.

Honestly, between Josh Smith, Croom, North, Wolf, Malone, Pig, Hurd, Kamara, and Dobbs feet....I don't think it's going to be a huge blow to our offense if Von doesn't come back. I'm in no way saying that he's not talented, but I don't think we'll suffer without him.

I say at least 7. He was tough to contain when healthy. Add more experienced healthy guys around him, only makes him more dangerous.

worth 7 per game but only had 5 tds? we played 13 games....so im leaning towards 2-3 max. That would be assuming this offense wasnt any better which i think it will be.

I don't think having or not having Von changes anything in the W-L column. JMO

We are talking about a young man's future here. If recent reports are true and the accusations against him are false, and he is being used as a political pawn, then people need to start screaming bloody murder and holding those responsible (an assistant DA, you say?) accountable. The more press coverage the better. This sort of sneering, oppressive, institutional arrogance disgusts me.

I think there is some questions IMO. Will North be dominant and healthy? And will Smiths and Crooms injuries from last year affect them. I think Pearson out is a huge blow to the team. Can't say if we would win more with or with out him but I would be concerned

Agreed. If Preston Williams is able to play, I'll feel even better. Without him, our base 3WR set is still North, Howard, Smith/Malone. Add in Croom and we are still in decent shape. Heck even Jonathan Johnson did some damage last year and people forget about him.

and yet couldn't manage to stay out of trouble himself? The thing about these assault cases is this: Women don't go to the police for kicks. If they go to the police, they usually have a good reason for doing so because why would anyone go through the whole investigatory process otherwise? Also, the university and the police have different objectives and different standards of proof, so of course a person may not be prosecuted for lack of sufficient proof or other reasons, but the university can still mete out punishment such as a suspension. Perhaps this has all been hashed out previously in this very long thread...It is the same difficulty that the pro teams or leagues can find themselves in when a guy is very likely to have done something wrong but investigators end up not charging him with a crime--I think Greg Hardy is an example, and there are many others. Hardy was not prosecuted--as I recall because a woman decided not to press charges or somesuch--but he was still suspended by the NFL, for 10 games now reduced to 4. These cases are complicated--and we are, rightly, in an environment where any charge of sexual assault is going to be treated very seriously.

Just because he didn't have the most TDs, does not mean he didn't make the catches and plays that allowed someone else to do so. He's a very dangerous weapon, and while we may not miss him dearly, we will most likely still wish we had him, if nothing else for quality depth.

Assuming he's not back, that is.

I liked the mood in this thread when Ericvol said he'd be reinstated Friday. Now... Not so much. Are you still sticking by that prediction?

I wish we had him. If he turns out to be a rapist, I wish we didn't.

Even if he is, how far behind is he going to be? What kind of football shape will he be in? He's been away from the program for quite sometime now. Would he be able to return in enough time to even be a major contributor this season? We may be better off reshirting him and letting him get back in shape, participate next spring, etc and then have him come back full strength for 2016.

DeerPark I know this is a bit of a thread hijack, but since you've been actively posting here I wanted to ask you, has there been any talk around the University of Gameday coming here for the Oklahoma game?

Von's production value to the team on Saturdays (using 2014 data) is:
  • measured one way --> 36 ypg == 36/100 TD pg == 2.2 ppg
  • measured another way --> 5 TD in 11 g == .45 TD pg == 2.7 ppg
So 2.2 - 2.7 points per game is his value added.

But the alternatives are not "Von on field" or "play with 10". Doesn't work that way. If Von's out, another WR steps in. So what's the ppg value of Von's replacement? Let's say it is Josh Smith:

Smith (2014 data, averaged over the 3 games he played in):
  • measurement A --> 45 ypg == 45/100 TD pg == 2.7 ppg
  • measurement B --> 1 TD in 3 g == .33 TD pg = 2.0 ppg
So 2.0 - 2.7 ppg is Smith's value added.

Therefore, if Smith replaces Von as one of the three starting WRs, we will drop between 0.0 and 0.2 ppg.

That's the true net cost of losing Von this season. It's not massive.

I don't mean to be cold or callous about the situation. I like Von, appreciate what he's done on the field in the past. I hope he didn't do any of the stuff that's alleged against him, and hope all involved see justice come out of it in a reasonable time frame.

But speaking in purely operative terms for the team, his absence will be a case of "reload and keep firing."

p.s. Von's value as "depth" is there, but also limited. Not counting Von, we have 7 returning WRs ... plus (assuming Williams passes the ACT retest) three incoming freshmen and some walk-ons. Plus the possibility of Malik Foreman and Jauan Jennings moving to the position to help out. We're ok on depth, even assuming a few injuries over the course of the season.

go look at the numbers that were just posted above this post

Von's absence won't be a big deal IF everyone else stays healthy. But if we lose two or more WRs to serious injuries, that group will become seriously thin and Dobbs might appear to revert to his freshman self throwing the ball. And that's not going to produce many Ws, especially with a mediocre/bad OL.

Well, there's the numbers. hard to argue with. I bet the staff has these types of metrics for each player. Might be why they're not pushing the line too hard here.

Unless Von makes a huge step forward on the field.. he's pretty replaceable.

I will say this though. 45 points over the course of a season is no small margin. That's 12% of the team total for 2014.
