Vols Hoops assistant Adam Howard resigns

JMO, but if I'm Hart and this appears to be the way things are headed, use this as an opportunity. Nobody else is going to be looking for a coach, or publicly pursuing them and offering during the season, if I'm Hart and I know Tyndall is gone at the end of the season, I seriously consider making the move around the new year.

Let Pinkins take over, and get a 3-4 month head start on all the other schools out there, that's similar to what Auburn did with Barbee, although not quite as early. Make the move, identify a few guys, this time actually do your thorough vetting process, and have someone hired in March so it's the talk around the NCAA's and the guy can start assembling a staff before the spring signing period.

I doubt you get too far ahead in the process unless you are hiring a guy who is currently unemployed or just dying to leave his current job. You aren't going to be given permission by any AD worth his salt to speak to a coach during the season, so at best, you are dealing with their agent to gauge if there is even any interest. It would be pretty shady of any coach to entertain offers during a season IMO.

I 100% agree with this although I think you have to give Hart a demerit for messing this up. I mean the guy has done a great job overall but this is going to set us back for a few seasons.

I can't highlight it in my phone but this is in regards to your last sentence. Wouldn't UT also have to have permission from the school said coach was at for us to even speak to him?

Yes. I noted that earlier in the same post. No AD worth his salt is going to grant permission to any other school to contact a sitting head coach.

Can you imagine the backlash if Dave Hart allowed Michigan to interview Butch Jones this week ahead of the Vandy game???

As you stated, agents can resolve all of those issues.

Some of those issues, not all of them. Are you going to allow your agent to interview for you? Is Tennessee going to allow an agent to interview on behalf of a candidate? Is a hypothetical athletic department going to cooperate in your attempts to vet/research their current head coach?

At best, you can gauge potential interest before late March/early April. That's about it.

You can do a lot more than gauge potential interest using back channels.

Like? "A lot more" is a pretty vague wording.

You can gauge mutual interest, which would include loosely discussing terms of money/contract length with an agent. What else?

In Lane Kiffins case somebody could be on campus scouting talent for him. Btw not talking about football talent.

I think all but a handshake and a signature can be agreed on through an agent. I also have no clue about negotiations. I just know human nature when an opportunity is there for the taking.

I don't want Dave Hart choosing our next basketball coach if it comes down to it. I just don't. It better be a hiring firm.

A handshake, a signature, an interview, a thorough background check that involves cooperation from his current school. I mean, are you really suggesting we hire someone without even interviewing them? It simply cannot ALL be done through backchannels.

People are freaking out because they THINK Hart didn't properly vet Tyndall, even though the NCAA, USM, and conference officials cleared him. Can you imagine the fan reaction if they hired a coach that never even formally interviewed?

This is gonna stupid, but if the NCAA cleared him then why all of a sudden do they fill the need to investigate him again ?

Well when you put it like that.

I don't like this at all . Hart has already shown he will not pony up the money to hire a big name coach , so we will likely end up our 10th coach on the list instead of the 5th .

They cleared him at the time of Tennessee's inquiry into any open or closed NCAA investigations. They (no for that matter) had no knowledge of these allegations at that time.

Not trying to be sarcastic, but who do you think would hire the search firm, and who do you think the search firm answers to? Besides search firms act simply as the third party so an AD and the University can legally say that "we have not had any contact with coach whoever." AD's and Univ President's hire people not search firms.

Hart is Cheek's and Haslem's puppet. He gets to go on record as making the hire, but he is offering what they tell him they are willing to pay. Since Cheek and company took over, the mindset has been cheap hire's and a willingness to let coaches learn on the job. This is why almost all our teams are struggling.
