Vols Fall Practice #4

Merk ain't giving Joey the starting spot. Very interesting he's been better more than Joey. Maybe the competition has lit a fire under his ass. I love it.
Perhaps, but I’m hoping we get to see an equal dose of them for Syracuse because as we know, JG and Milton were practice merchants while Dobbs and Hooker were gamers under the lights.

Receivers haven’t been good since 2022 and appear to have gotten worse. We don’t seem to prioritize guys who can catch a football when recruiting receivers.
The fact that McCoy and Thornton weren't 100% in 23 & 24 isn't lost on me. In 23 McCoy missed 8 games, Thornton 5. White carried the load.

Brazzell came dinged up.

You think it hasn't been good, I think was a WR room with the injury bug...we will never know had good it could have been. Shame

That’s my thinking as well although Joey needs to start showing improvement each day and being more comfortable

Wonder if there’s a chance we play 2 QBs for Syracuse and ETSU
I hope not. One guy gotta to know he’s the starter and get those 1st reps and go out there and lead.
Unless you plan on doing special packages like TX did with Arch or we so far up with a lead the next guy plays otherwise pick your starter and roll with him out of fall camp

So you just won't address our QB issues with Milton and Nico because you dislike Pope?

Somebody can be held accountable for the deficiencies in every position room. Folks often cite Martinez as struggling with DBs or Elarbee as struggling with the OL or Pope struggling with WRs.

Some of those criticisms are warranted given our performance.

So, what about the QB room over the last 2 years? Who is the problem there?
I think we got about as much as possible out of Milton and Nico. If we see a lack of development with the current crop of QBs, then I will be concerned.

WRs dropping catchable passes is disgusting and unacceptable. A coach who accepts that happening is unacceptable. I am not saying a coach should eat a players face off whenever that happens. But he should require that player or players to work to the maximum allowed by rules. If they are not willing to work on their own until they stop dropping passes, then find players who will work hard and catch the football. No player will be perfect, but those WRs are worth less than zero to the team if they do not consistently catch the catchable passes thrown to them.

Disgusting? It's a game played by humans, there will always be mistakes. You see dropped passes every game in the NFL. Part of the game. Relax.

Yeah! I think he should torture em!

“I did that as a JUCO quarterback,” said Heupel. “I think it’s hard. We divided halves. It was a unique situation. A guy (Salanoa) that had left didn’t qualify, or didn’t get his last class, and came back. He was a good player. I’m still great friends with him, and we both had an opportunity to move on and go play at a high college level, too.

“If you’re going to try to trade them in play in and play out, or [by] quarters, that’s tough to manage. We want somebody to be the starter. We’re going to find out who that is. And there’s no set timetable. I don’t think you can do that. You can’t handcuff yourself. They’ve got to go earn it. And so we’ll go through that.”

Heupel should embrace playing multiple quarterbacks in 2021, even if Tennessee's first-year coach didn’t sound enamored with that option when asked about it Tuesday.

“I anticipate us having a starter,” Heupel said. “That doesn’t mean that other guys won’t have an opportunity to play. What that looks like is dictated by performance during the course of training camp.

“If you look at our track record, we’ve typically had a starter, but other guys have had situational roles that have been a big part of our success.”

Do people here just follow UT football? It’s 4 practices.
Take a couple minutes to look at college and pro team reports. Drops, bad passes, etc is commonplace.
I think maybe too many played PlayStation or Xbox Madden and have no idea what it really looks like out there. They don’t connect on 100% and never will.

I said, "No player will be perfect, etc..." You'll need to make such hollow arguments with someone else. Gotta hop.
