Vols Fall Practice #4

WRs dropping catchable passes is disgusting and unacceptable. A coach who accepts that happening is unacceptable. I am not saying a coach should eat a players face off whenever that happens. But he should require that player or players to work to the maximum allowed by rules. If they are not willing to work on their own until they stop dropping passes, then find players who will work hard and catch the football. No player will be perfect, but those WRs are worth less than zero to the team if they do not consistently catch the catchable passes thrown to them.

We will see how far penny pinching gets us
Far be it from me to contradict a kindred spirit, but it might not be "penny pinching". Perhaps Heupel decided to roll with the younger receivers instead of rolling the dice in the portal. Let us not forget that the portal giveth and it taketh away. Bring in a portal guy or three and you likely push the youngsters on your roster into the portal. Forgive my disruption to your sphere of negativity. Know the effort it takes to create it. Carry on brother but be on the lookout for the pesky lawyers on this site. They're a pox on civilization but we have no choice but to endure their presence.

The fact that we didn’t pursue anyone in the portal who had ever taken a snap is malpractice. Idk if you’ll ever see a WR group with less experience in the portal era.
IIRC, they made a strong push to get Zachariah Branch. They also offered veteran BYU WR and return specialist Keelan Marion. Part of the problem could’ve been the Nico drama.

This is the scary thing about our QB evaluations. Perhaps practice isn't showing the coaches what they actually need to see from "game ready" QBs.

It sucks to think Navy Shuler COULD have been a gamer like Hooker but how would the coaches know? (Not entirely serious there but the idea is QB evaluation in practice AND in recruiting could be concerning given our issues at the position.)
I think part of the problem is we have recruited several quarterbacks that must have looked good in camps or whatever but weren’t proven game time qbs. I’m not saying that every qb with great Highschool stats will be a great college qb but from the stats I’ve went through for multiple players, not just ours, it seems highly rare that a qb with mediocre high school stats will be an excellent college qb. I think we need to get back to putting weight on what they’ve done in real games vs what they can do with pajamas and sunglasses on.

I'm guessing both he and Brazzel don't have a worry about losing their starting jobs so they're content to sit until much closer to the opener. Yeah, I said it.
I’ll say it again. This staff load manages every fall. Don’t get the guys you need hurt senselessly. And get the guys who aren’t ready the reps.

Including Joey and Merk would have been slightly relevant…

After the Bama game Hyatt could have walked into any public space in Knoxville and been celebrated by everyone present. So where was he?

Hyatt was inside Tennessee’s indoor practice facility, catching balls from a Jugs machine.

DEDICATION
Do these receivers have that?

I'm in no position to question Josh Heupel who nearly won a Heisman and did win a Natty as a QB and was QB coach for Sam Bradford when he won the Heisman. I believe he knows QB talent.

I am concerned that only 1 out of 4 QBs and teams Heupel has had at UT could really efficiently run his offense.

While we were successful in 2024, it wasn't because of tempo and the veer and shoot but more on the grit of Dylan Sampson and our excellent defense.

I'm glad Heupel CAN and DOES win games without his signature offense firing on all cylinders and he proves he is a very good football coach by doing so but I'm curious if we'll see the veer and shoot REALLY take off again at UT.

I know coach's change based on talent but if your signature offense can only be run well by a few QBs, something has to give.

Without digging through all Fingers' 21 treasure trove of practice info here's Day 9

In addition to leading the line, Milton also was the sharpest in routes-on-air, which featured some combo routes, crossing patterns, comebacks and post-corners. Milton was on target with each throw, while Hooker and Bailey each had an overthrow on the flag routes. The quarterbacks also worked on mesh points with the running backs and their footwork taking snaps out of the pistol.

great practice players have fooled many a coach...in 21 most thought Joe would start
I’m tired of people criticizing this. He won a game in the NFL last year he’s obviously talented

My criticism wasn’t of CJH or really anyone specifically. More that as a general assessment we’ve been let down by several prospects that were relatively hyped up based on something apparently other than what they had achieved in game. Specifically Nico and JG. I will personally not get excited for another qb that doesn’t have game stats to back it up.
If I was gonna criticize CJH, I would say it’s fair to start questioning headed in to his 5th year when he’s going to put a QB (that he’s recruited and effectively produces in his system) on the field.

It’s the OL IMO

He specifically recruited Milton, who is a good QB but probably not for the veer and shoot, and Nico, also talented but not a veer and shoot kind of QB. Hooker was already coming to UT and obviously could execute the offense extremely well.

IMO we'll have to wait to see if Brandon learns and can run Heupel's offense at tempo. That will be 2027 or 2028, I suppose.

Someone mentioned the O Line which is a good catch, I think. Elarbee has been with Heupel several years and knows the offense too and what kind of players it needs. Hopefully these young guys we have now are those kind of players.

Again, Heupel wins and that's the job but I suspect he, like me, would like to see more tempo and more passes like we saw in 2022 from his offense.

I don't mean this as "Fahr Heupel" in any way but I'm itching for him to put together the pieces to make UT a destination for his kind of athletes.
