Very early observations on QB....

I really think it's more that we have a proven QB coach now. We've had really good QB's over the past few years because several have made it to the pros. That said with a really good QB coach can make a world of difference.

JG will start because he has the locker room and team. KC is a really good back up in case JG gets hurt but I think it's JG's team to lose.

O line play is halfway decent and we can win 8 games. The defense is going to keep us in a lot of games this year IMHO. As I've said in the past: Run the ball, play stout defense, limit the turnovers and win special teams and we win at least 9 games.

:)

Well said!!

JG is a tough kid. He took a beating from some hellacious defenses last season and kept on competing. He will need to show the same grit this season.

I must have missed that issue. Would love to see where that's been mentioned the last year or so. He's got the tools to do it through and hope he does. That would be a great recruiting pitch to future recruits and the elite QB's. But I will call your bluff on the same experts saying they were higher on one over the other. Can't imagine those same numerous NFL guys coming out and saying they are even higher on JG than they were with Shrout. You show me proof of that, I will never question anything you say from now on and will start a Man Crush Creepers fan club for JG in your honor. I'll set it up and you run it how you see fit! Honestly don't understand the unhealthy obsession you have with a player but it's not for me to judge. Personally I would love to see JG then Shrout after him lead us the next 4-+ years, give us QB stability and both end up winning lots of games for us. Then both being future NFL stars. Not sure why you pull for one being successful over another, but some mysteries should remain unsolved. I'll be anxiously awaiting visual proof of your claim!😉😉
He’s already dug in on Shrout never taking a meaningful snap because of his performance in ONE season of high school football. Knocked the professionals who praised his performance in a camp but NOW those same hacks have doubled that praise for JG...in some...unwritten article...that he can’t locate...just...right now.

Honestly, I don't feel good about any of them right now. I'm just trying to read the tea leaves... hoping that one or preferably 2 are better than they've shown so far. I suspect Pruitt's motivation to find a grad transfer can be found in watching the games started by JG and WM in the latter part of the season plus the departure of Dormady. That's sort of a head scratcher too... why leave with a pro-style coach coming in?
I think Dormady made his mind up to transfer the moment he shut his season down after getting benched. His injury was to a non throwing shoulder that dated back to fall camp. I’m sure taking hits on an injured shoulder sucked and all, but IMO it’s pretty telling that he was willing to fight through that injury as a starter, but not as a backup. I question how much respect a guy who does that can hold in a locker room.

Well said and I was thinking the same thing. Hell it's great for us long-term for both to be great QB's and Shrout take over when JG leaves. Don't understand the picking one player mentality and screw the rest even if their player got beaten out. Don't see any good coming from having that mindset. I'll pull equally as hard for every player no matter the position. Even Shrout acknowledged he has a lot to learn and has to work on his turnover mistakes.. personally liked hearing him own and acknowledge that. Hell he's just scraping the surface and just needs the time to get more experience and learning everything involved with playing QB. Inexperience is the one thing holding him back.

Swain says Guarantano has a huge lead...if anybody puts stock in that.

He left due to getting his job taken by a better qb who he knew he couldn't beat out. That left a hole we needed to fill with someone with experience, hence pursuit of a grad transfer. Easy explanations.
You have no idea why he left. Could have been that he wanted to end his career closer to home. Maybe his girlfriend had something to do with it.

As for having been beaten out... he was playing injured by the time Jones made the change. Since he'd already beaten JG out once... I doubt he was afraid of the competition. In spite of your delusions otherwise.... JG has NOT proven he's a great QB. He has the physical talent. For his sake and UT's I hope he matures and gets his crap together. But from where he was last fall to what he needs to be to win the job and lead the team... is a long, long way.

Well if Shrout is good enough to be in the conversation, then that is a good sign. We don't need any drop off if we have to go with number 2 or 3.

Also if Shrout looks competitive now, then look out as he probably has a higher ceiling than someone who knows the system (KC) or someone who had the luxury of learning the system this Spring (JG).

I just don't realize how someone has a huge lead in practice 3.... Heck Chryst and JG just found out the night after practice or yesterday at some point during film session what they need to fix and work on in the next practice.....

JG has been in the program and around most of the guys longer. As I stated earlier at the open practice JG seemed to be the leader. Chryst seemed really lazy in the drills and scrimmage from what I saw. I will say this. He is much larger than any of the other QB's we have.

THREAD: PLEASE FORGIVE ME

OMG: Luv it. Hard to explain to people that Sears actually made some of the best musical instruments at one time. My current: 72 Les Paul, 74 Guild D50, 89 Strat, 97 Strat, / Had a Silvertone amp 150 years ago - 2 12s cabinet and the head. Best amp ever made. History: Ampeg, Fender, Peavey and most recently Mesa Boogie tube 1 12 60 Watt.

OK, I’M DONE.....I need a cigarette..Carry on Volnation!

Thank you!!!

That Silvertone amp is legendary. I envy your overall setup though. Where you live? I just relocated to Nashville.

Volnation musicians unite.....

probably best done in another thread, lol.

Sorry guys. Quarterbacks and stuff

This doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the first part of what you said, though. QBs are told things they need to work on in the film room every week of the season, from their first year on campus until they graduate and throughout their NFL careers if they make it that far.

That doesn’t necessarily affect depth chart pecking orders. Especially if what a QB needs to work on is something that comes down to natural ability like being able to throw the ball downfield.

Mic drop after 3 days without pads? JG had a long way to go after last season. I would hope he could improve in getting rid of the ball on time and body language, because he had miles to go after last season.

Let's see how it plays out after the competition. Somebody needs to grab it and run with in real time scrimmages.

One of the first things Helton needs to talk about in the QB room this week is that collectively, they threw 3 picks on Sunday.

I think in this situation when you've had a grad transfer who has only had 3 practices it is a big deal. He has to adjust to what the coaches want.

I’m sure that’s true.

Still, that doesn’t mean that one guy can’t have a lead. Kind of indicates that there is some catching up to do.

I believe there was always catching up to do though. He hasn't been making the reads or anything until these 3 practices. So for media to crown any of our QBs the number one after only 3 practices is a lil meh.

Again, JG looked good and so did KC obviously they want KC to go long more. If that's what is putting him behind by day 3 then that's not a hard fix for him. I honestly just think the media is trying to build this QB battle up.

They are both good QBs. It'll be good to hear the reports for the next 20+ days.

JG appears to be leading. He's going first with the 1's and possibly getting the most reps with them. That is a more important indicator than the observations of reporters covering the program. The competition however is not over and KC is doing some good things as well.

It seems many are basing their predictions on who throws the prettier pass or who has more "zip". Danny Wuerffel was a prolific passer, 1st team AA, and a Heisman winner. He threw some of the ugliest passes you've ever seen and didn't have a great arm. Casey Clausen was very effective for UT but his arm was more similar to KC than JG. There's more to being a QB than throwing a pretty ball. In fact, it is more important to have good ball placement and touch than to be able to throw it through a brick wall.

Bottom line... the competition is over when Pruitt announces a starter. There will be "signs" before then... but he'll let us know when it is written in stone.

Some of y’all are hopeless. So deadset on JG being trash it’s honestly pathetic. Guarantano is the leader right now and I don’t see that changing. All of the insiders are saying the same thing. While Chryst may have batter knowledge if the pro system that doesn’t mean JG is incapable of learning it as well and surpassing him. Last year was rough and but I can’t stress enough how badly your performance will be if your offense line is as poor as that one last year not to mention playbook and calling was a joke

Got any source for that? Reports were that he was around a bit in the spring and he’s been here all summer doing 7 on 7 work.

Being able to make reads was supposed to be an area he was supposed to have a lead on JG heading into this season. Given the fact that he’s at a disadvantage from an arm talent standpoint, the fact that he’s playing catch up on the things he was supposed to be better at isn’t promising.

Honestly I don’t think either of them is that good at this point and all the media is doing so far is saying “yeah this guy looks better than that guy.”

Both will probably start at some point this year. If the light comes on for JG mentally maybe we see good QB play this year, but most likely it’s not gonna be a great year for us in QB play. JG still has a LONG way to go to be a complete QB and our RS Sr grad transfer with twice as much experience is playing catch up with the mental side of things is a bad sign, IMO.

Both of those guys had way more arm talent than Chryst and has better stats as true freshmen than Chryst had as a RS Sophomore or RS Jr.

@Darth_Shiveman yes KC was in 7v7s and it was said he was doing good. It was also stated that JG was doing good.

By me saying he hasn't been making the reads I should have added for as long as JG has in Helton/Pruitt's system.

That being said our QB position is obviously of concern. I have no faith in the media stating one is ahead of the other after 3 practices. Heck last year they said JG was ahead of QD and then QD ended up starting and we know how that all played out.

I am not going for one or the other I am going for them all and I think 3 practices is just to early to crown a number one. I also believe that each QB will get better that is what Tyson Helton does he makes QBs better.

So, again it'll be refreshing to hear the reports coming out of camp up until the WV game.
