Utah State

It's really unfortunate to have to open the year in 2014 against them. They are a good football team that knocked off NIU last night and pretty much shut down Lynch. Win, and it will be no big deal to anyone outside of Knoxville - you're supposed to win your home opener against a non conference team. Lose, and there will be a chernobyl like meltdown on VN and BJ will lose much of the fan base before the season even gets started.

Thoughts?

Several factors have to be considered here:

1. Same thing was said going against WKU and we know how that one turned out.

2. Mid-major teams have a history of coming into Neyland and literally being overwhelmed by the size of the confines and wilting shortly there after.

3. IMO, it's the 1st game of the season and the #118 will be ready to take out it's frustration on this opponent. Granted, team #118 may not resemble the once promising unit as the conference schedule is in full swing, but this is still Utah State.

4. Even with ZERO experience, the gap in talent should be enough to win by 7 points on head to head match-up.

5. Any comparisons to Wyoming really can not be made. Completely different circumstances.

And Vandy vs a woeful Wake Forest team.... needed a miracle catch by Matthews in double coverage that converted 4th and 12 or so to come back and win that game late....at home.

Vandy with 4 turnovers 2 in the red zone. The starting 4 secondary guys, starting rb and ACS playing on a torn acl still found a way to win against UT in Knoxville. Vandy was also the underdog in that game as well as the Florida and Georgia games. Good teams find ways to win even when they don't play well. Wake Forrest nearly beat Miami this year too.

Will Utah State turn the ball over 6 or 7 times? The Western KY receiver that had the ball bounce of his face and UT take it to the house was something to behold.

Would vandy have beat Florida without all the turnovers they had in that game? I don't think so.

Also vandy needs to send UT a thank you card for beating up on teams before they had to play them. And a big thank you to the official who overturned the call without video evidence in the UT game.

They have shown up to play against better teams than TN the last few years.

at Oklahoma Sooners -lost 31-24
at Auburn Tigers -lost 42-38
at Wisconsin Badgers -lost 16-14
at USC Trojans -lost 17-14

And what is the point of this? That sometimes they can lose a close game against major FBS programs instead of getting blown out?

We play Utah state in the opener next year at Neyland. In 2011 they were 11-2 and ranked 16 th at years end. Currently they are 7-4 and 6-1 in the mountain west..They have a qb who will be a senior next year, one of the best dual threat guys in the country,Chuckie Keeton. They lost to USC 17-14 this year and their other losses were to BYU,Boise and Utah. They look like they are for real,by the way Keeton had season ending knee injury against BYU in early october. Man does it sure does seem like we catch a lot of teams when they are playing really well. Not a cupcake to Start the season. We play Georgia to start the SEC slate and wind up the regular season in Nashville playing the black team to the west.

I posted this a while back in the Oklahoma thread. Utah state has been playing good ball.

Compared to what Tennessee had to play this year, Utah State would be like getting a cup cake!

NIU doesn't play in a strong enough conference for me to put any stock in them. Utah State defeating them doesn't really impress me.

Butch also never said he wasn't. :)

You think Dobbs was 3rd string? Not that it really matters. Just curious as to your point.

Jones said they were "co" number 2. Other than what he says... I have no real way of knowing. I suppose he could have been lying?

I think the fact that UT had 4 qbs on the roster, and when they made the trip to either Oregon or Florida, that when they only took 3 of the 4 on the trip.... and the 1 QB that didn't make the trip was Dobbs..... the math wasn't difficult to do at that point - Dobbs was the 4th string QB.

Not sure why some refuse to acknowledge it. Did we really need Butch to make an announcement about it when it was very clear? Why would they go to a road game and leave their 3rd string QB at home while bringing their 4th string? Makes no sense.

Jones did make an announcement about it after Peterman was hurt and didn't make an announcement of anything different.

In my opinion, a rush to judgement on "coaching ability" is at play here also. Past failure to properly develop talent into SEC caliber skills is readily apparent. Sorry, there is no instant "mix with water" and stand back fix.

Sorry but that's an absolute cop out and completely false. Dooley wasn't a very good HC but many of the coaches who worked for him were just as good as the ones on this staff if not better.

And YES.... as in YES... you should be able to see some impact from the coaches IMMEDIATELY if they are good. That doesn't fix everything but again absolutely NO ONE here has demanded that. What we have criticized this staff for is not fixing much of anything or accomplishing even minimal goals.

What were people here saying before the season? Some were saying, "six wins and a bowl" will prove we are on the right track. Others didn't even have that much courage. They just said "be competitive". The staff accomplished NEITHER. Others minimized it even more and said they'd be happy if there was discernible improvement over the course of the season. THAT didn't happen either.

I am not making a final conclusion. I hope as much as you do that this is all part of some grand "process" that will show improvement next fall. But their "coaching ability" relative to the competition in the SEC is DEFINITELY very MUCH in question.

Utah St won't have a fraction of the talent UT will field. WKU didn't either.

If Jones and company can coach and have developed their team during the offseason... it should not be close.

Of course they should have kicked the dog doo out of Vandy this year too.... so I'm not counting on anything.

.

You answered this seriously. The whole "experience" thing is just setting up an excuse. Utah State loses most of their D production, top two RB's, and top two WR's.

They will be no more experienced than UT and far less talented. It will be the second year in this staffs' system. The only factor that can make this anything less than a blow out is coaching on both sides. They will have to outcoach UT's staff badly to win or even keep it close.
