I know UT picked up a top DE this year but UT really needed to recruit a top DT. Losing both starting DT's Turk McBride and Matt McGothlin. I'm disappointed UT didn't recruit one. UT is going to be thin at DT next season.

The best prospect is :

Rolando Melancon

but UT needed someone who could play immediately.

I have to be honest and say J Mapu played well as a freshmen but he was disappointing last year. UT could use a lot of immediate help. Doesn't look like UT recruited any impact players at DT.

Secondary has Berry to step in and play. Hefney will still be back. DT will start a couple of underachieving back-ups from last season, Bolden and Mapu without much depth.

That Langley ranking is waaaaay too low. The coaches reportedly think as much of him as they do of Austin.

Melancon and Langley are big time

Rivals (the better recruiting source) has Langley ranked better than Melancon (both are in the Rivals 250), and since Langley enrolled in January, I'm assuming he'll participate in Spring drills. He may be ready to rumble sooner than later.

Langley is #12 on rivals
Melancon is #22 on rivals

thats looks a lot better. Never thought scout and rivals had such a Disparity in player rankings.

I hate to say it, but losing Matt McGothlin will be a step in the right direction when it comes to better defensive line play.

UT recruited a lot of D-linemen. We recruited the hell out of Marvin Austin. Unfortunately, we didn't sign all of them. As for Austin, we lost him to Butch Davis, one of the best recruiters in the game. Regardless, DTs have huge bust potential. I have as much faith in Melancon's ability to contribute as I do in Austin's.

Yea i was thinking the same thing this season, becuase he plays soft and doesnt look to tackle the ball carrier, it seems to me that he just goes out every play and takes on a blocker so he can free someone else to make the tackle

He was a walk-on who worked himself to be a starter. So what, that he wasn't quick enough to get by the blocker, but he was strong enough to hold his ground. He was a starter because with the losses of Harrell and McDaniel and the uninspiring play of Bolden, he was the second best DT on the team behind Turk.

Thank you Matt for the five years of hard work coming from a lowly walk-on to a starter and a contributor to winning season.:salute:

uhhhhh...marvin austin

Wasn't Demonte Bolden one of the top DTs in the country coming out of HS? His "immediate impact" sure didn't pan out...I personally dont see Austin being an instant stud DT either...although at UNC it won't be hard to stand out from the rest of the team :p

That is why I posted a thread awhile back about us maybe using a 3-4 this year. Although we do have a lack of ILBs, I think it could be feasible with our lack of depth and playmakers at DT

Mapu was far from a disappointment last year considering he hadn't seen a weightroom in 2 years nor had he practiced football for 2 years. Mapu did exceptionally well!

Do yourself a favor and stay off Scout.com they are really clueless, ESPN is even worse. Langley(12th Best DT) is better than Melancon(22nd Best DT) and will play next fall. Mapu will play better having had an off-season to get ready and not just a month. Bolden who knows what will happen with him. Walter Fisher will have experience under his belt and if healthy will contribute alot, also Chase Nelson and Victor Thomas will get a chance to show what they can do, add that Wes Brown and Jarrod Shaw will get looks in spring to see if they can contribute at the Tackle part, UT also added Brimfield(28th Best DT).

Impact at DT? Langley

As for DB's those are covered with Evans(4.4), Willingham(4.35), Berry(4.31) and McKenzie(4.4) added to Hefney
