Unofficial Coaching Search Thread

Haven't had time to read a lot of info here lately. Has anyone mentioned Lawrence Frank as a possibility?

Anything above $2M would put them in the top 20 highest paid coaches in the nation. Stallings is 20th @ $1.9M and has been at Vandy 14 years. Then again Anderson is at $$2.2M and has been @ Arkansas 3 years. It's hard to tell what Tennessee will do but I expect them to be in the $1.3M-$1.7M range as a starting salary. I don't think that's cheap and should get us a decent coach.

But then, what do I know. I just a fan that bleeds Orange.

To me if youre gonna pay 2 for any of these, offer marshal 2.7 or so just to see.

They go on to say that Tennessee would have to exceed $2m for Boyle and they've been told by multiple sources Hart will not exceed $2m. I think you can likely cross Pitino off as well, he would want close to $2m, add in his buyout and you're talking a lot of money for a guy who's done nothing except have the right father.

That leaves White, Miles, Miller, Mack and Tyndall. From reading multiple national analysts I would be shocked if Miles ditches Nebraska, he loves it there and has it much better than most would think.

I would say top 4 are White, Tyndall, Mack and Miller with miller being the least likely.

JMO

Mack clearly stands out in that crowd.

How about this resume:

Former assistant and associate head coach at Duke for 7 years

Replaced a coaching legend as head coach and went 4-7 years in the NCAA tournament, including an elite 8 run.

Coached in the D-League for 4 years

NBA assistant coach for 3 years

Head coach for one of the biggest european basketball teams C.S.K. Moscow

Currently the head assistant coach for an NBA team.

He is also under 50 years old.

IMO if Hart pays anyone 2.5-3, it will be Marshall or Smart. If he drops down to the next group, I think he goes all the way down to 1-1.1 and hires White. No reason to offer a coach 1.6-1.8 mil just because Zo was set to get that and to hold your spot in coaching pay ranks. Mack would be the only guy IMO who would warrant 1.3-1.5 in that group.

Tyndall is just as good as White, but he's older and winning at USM requires much less effort than LA Tech. However, he was outstanding at Morehead.

If they aren't gonna go after a Marshall or Howland, they may as well go with White or someone similar. I would much rather pay White 1.3m than to pay Boyle 2m and I wouldn't come close to paying Pitino 2m.

If you can't get a TOP guy, no reason to overpay for a mid-level guy that isn't any better than someone almost a million dollars cheaper, IMO.

Exactly how I see it.

Hire White at 1.1. Save 700 grand over Zo, plus another 900 grand in buyout profit. 1.6 Million in the bank and I'll take my chances he is a steal by year 2. He wants some extra cash to go out and hire an SEC hired gun type recruiter for his staff, the $$ is there. He has UT in the dance in year 1 or 2, I would be quick to up his salary and show him we will pay for a winner.

I don't think Marshal deserves 2.5-3. JMO. The conference he plays in is weak and other than last years run, tourney results don't warrant it. 2.5-3 would put him in the top 10 range in the nation. Just don't see it. And I don't see Smart as a fit for UT. I believe we will go low D1 to Mid-major @ 1.3-1.7.

They may not warrant it. JMO that 2.5-3 is what it would take to get them to consider leaving their current jobs. If a guy is making 2 mil at a small school, he's not usually going to uproot his family and move for 100 grand more a year. In most cases the current school will just match the small boost/offer anyway. IMO if Hart hires a guy at 1.3-1.7, he has over paid. From the names being mentioned, I don't see anyone I like enough to pay that.

Which is why I've been saying get White if this is what it's down to, agree with you completely.

If Mack is actually a realistic candidate, go get him. I'm still perplexed why Howland isn't being discussed if 2/3 candidates are "up-and-comers"

Why do you think Miller is unlikely?

I have nothing to back this up, just a guess on my part...I'm thinking his AD was likely smart and front loaded this new contract he signed with a large buyout. Miller may only be making $600-$800k/year but I could see his buyout at around $2m possibly being that he just signed the new deal.

With money CLEARLY being a factor, I think that likely turns Hart off on him. I think it would also take $1.5m or possibly more to land him, which when you add in his buyout over a 5 years deal you're talking close to $2m you're investing in him.

In addition to that I think Miller likely realizes what a hot name he is, and is being told you're 1 more good year away from getting a better gig than Tennessee.

Like I've maintained, there has to be something NCAA related going on there. Too many schools have been open that he has let known he's interested in to have nobody even interview him this year.
