Ukraine Protests

I think it's the reaction to do something other than words. Let's face it, the EU and US have been behind the 8 ball the whole time with this Ukraine situation and this EO is just a quick "well, we (finally) did something" reaction.

the US and EU have been involved in this for a while. They got out-maneuvered but they've had their hands all over this (and that's in direct violation to the EO)

Agree, but we've been reacting to everything Russia does for pretty much the entire situation. The EO is something to at least point to as a first step countering this aggression. And like you said, it's nothing more than a poorly aimed shot figuratively speaking and doesn't have teeth so to speak as Velo pointed out.

Opinion: Putin's Orwellian theft of Crimea - CNN.com

If Putin's such a championing of democracy and self-determination, as he claims regarding Crimea, wonder how long it will take him until he gives the go ahead for similar referendums in the Northern Caucasus?

No need to answer that question; I already know.

Oh, and go Team Nationalism!

It's going to happen. The reassembly of The Motherland is beginning.

Opinion: Russia threatens to dominate the U.S. in the Arctic - CNN.com

On Tuesday, March 4, our existential angst got worse. At a revealing press conference, Putin claimed he had the right to go to war with Ukraine in defense of "Ukrainian citizens." Putin also said if he made the decision to go to war, "women and children" would act as a shield for Russian troops.

Anybody know if the above quote (from the article below) is legit? First I've heard of this, although I wouldn't put anything past that asshat.

Opinion: Putin won't stop at Crimea - CNN.com

Is Obama going to speak on Scotland? I am hearing they want to be independent. England is considering implementing laws to prevent them from voting for independence. Draw that red line Obummer!

Josh Rogin, a reporter for The Daily Beast, is announcing that Russia will unveil similar sanctions against European and American asset-holders tomorrow. One, in particular, he mentioned, is Dick Durbin.

Of course, all the sanctions thus far for each side is amateur hour, but no doubt they'll get more intense over time. Each side is gauging how far the other side will go.

The original article:

President of Russia

And original quote:

VLADIMIR PUTIN: Listen carefully. I want you to understand me clearly: if we make that decision, it will only be to protect Ukrainian citizens. And let’s see those troops try to shoot their own people, with us behind them – not in the front, but behind. Let them just try to shoot at women and children! I would like to see those who would give that order in Ukraine.

Not sure of the implication and what might be lost in translation.

The author of the opinion piece is a Ukrainian-American professor, but he seems to have no fondness for Putin obviously.

The English translation sounds simply like Putin is saying that the Ukrainian people themselves will be marching the way towards Kiev, demanding change and backed by the Russian military. Of course, that's also a convenient way of describing "human shields" as well. Who knows.

My "scoreboard" as it stands today:

EU/US +0.3
RUS -0.7

The west has gained most of a large EurAsian country, but it's broke, so it's a marginal gain (right now). Russia has lost most of a country that is central to the trade union it's been trying to form.

Yeah, I don't get the Putin love. He's shooting his self and his country in the head. But I guess he looks good doing it at least.

Obama's response to Crimea Referendum:

Sanctions against 11 individuals, 4 Ukraine and 7 Russian, none named Putin. That will make them change their tune.

Obama is trying to drive a nail with a plastic hammer.

He must think all these red lines are actually green. I just figured it out - President Obama is red-green colorblind!

As weak as the sanctions are, they're tougher than the sanctions implemented the last time Russia invaded another country.
