Can you give me an example of some foreign policy move by the US in earlier circumstances that would cause Putin to hesitate on this ? Of course not.
Of course I can...
Let's start with Syria shall we? The fact that a harder line wasn't taken in the entire Syrian affair is an example of the wishy washy nature of this administration. Go over the line? We'll move it back a tad. Instead of saying "This message is for both Assad and the rebel leaders. You use chemical weapons and we will blast your production facilities, storage units, delivery units capable of attacking targets and any weapons we find into the stone age" we said "well, it wasn't THAT bad and let's move this line back just a tad."
And no, I did not and still do not support action in Syria. But if you want a line not to be crossed there it is and I can guarantee both the rebels and the Syrians would have given it pause for though. But Obama started being soft which emboldened the Russians to take the lead and bailed us out.
How about Afghanistan? Since when do we allow our allies to release 65 prisoners known to be insurgents and terrorists and do nothing? Yet another perceived weakness allows Karzai to do whatever he wants since he knows he'll get away with it.
Don't get me started on Iran in which the French are taking a way stronger stance than we are. The effin French are playing hard ball here and we're giving in to the demands of a nation that hides nothing in it's desire to be a nuclear capable nation. Yet another situation where the US is perceived as soft.
And Benghazi...the Russians would have gone in and leveled several city blocks as well as killing their dogs to send a message that attacks on their diplomatic staff were not to be contemplated, much less conducted. The Russians wouldn't have cared if it was because of a YouTube video. There would have been the distinct smell in the Benghazi streets of burnt propellant they use on their AK rounds with a bunch of vodka soaked Alpha Group members chuckling about the havoc they raised. And what did we do? Absolutely nothing. Yet another situation where the US resolve looks weak.
Saudi Arabia sees our influence and resolve in the Middle East weakening and is going to take on Iran by themselves. (good luck)
Iraq plans on selling military hardware to Iran in clear violation of international sanctions. Military equipment we coincidentally sold/gave them. And telling us to bugger off at the same time.
China prepared a war game scenario where they simulated an invasion of Japan. If they are planning on it, they have to realize our ability to respond to such aggression is limited.
North Korea is at it again. Of course, when aren't they so I'll give you a pass on this one.
And now we have our political leaders downsizing our military. In a time where the Russian and Chinese military are growing, both in technology and numbers, we are scaling back.
Russians don't respect Obama, period, end of story. He bowed to pressure in removing the missile defense plans from Poland when countered by the Russia. They are rolling into the Ukraine as we speak and basically daring the rest of the world to do squat about it. Because we put them in the position to believe our resolve is soft and our leadership is weak. We caused this situation by not being decisive and showing the Russians and in turn the world we lacked the resolve and balls to play hard ball in our many foreign policy debacles.
I'll expect your tl;dr comments since it's contrary to your party line.
