The separatists had given Ukrainian military forces until 9pm tonight to withdraw and that has come and passed. Now there are reports of heavy fighting breaking out in the East. Including the first reports of shelling.

Just when you thought this situation couldn't get any crazier. Seems we now have a counter-counter insurgency, or something like that. The silent majority of the eastern Ukraine might finally be speaking up:

Edit: Supposedly steelworkers, miners, and other laborers have reclaimed some insurgent strongholds in Mariupol and are attempting to do the same in other towns.

It's a freaking flare!!! As one commenter posted, probably just a trip-wire flare to alert the soldiers to anyone approaching.

And of course there is absolutely no mention whatsoever of the recent developments concerning the oligarchs and the laborers.

I see that they've now officially changed the title and are no longer running it as their headline. I guess CNN isn't the only one that rushes to false conclusions. Probably what happened, the reporter triggered the flare, went bat**** crazy (as anyone probably would), and assumed they were firing at him due to his most likely limited knowledge of military precautions. Then the idiots at RT ran with it before checking the facts.

I would agree that it is much too early to declare victory or even that Obama's strategy is working, for that matter.

However, the author does offer a fairly compelling case (for the present moment).

Also, something else the author mentioned made me think: has globalization become essentially what nuclear armament is in preventing massive war against large powers? Large scale war, specifically against great powers, now seems to have become impossible not only due to nuclear weapons but to the integration of international economies. I suppose at the end of the day all it still requires is a nutcase. Is Putin our nutcase? Probably not.

I think the author even admitted that this might not be the result of Obama's strategy, per se, but that the global economy is reacting to the situation in a manner that aligns with Obama's intentions regarding the crisis. The argument is a little bit contorted as a result. I still think the author makes a fairly good case concerning the situation at the present. And present is the key word here.

The lesson that Putin is learning is that Russia depends on the global economy, whether it likes it or not, and the global economy doesn't like it when you go invading other countries and tempting the richest nations in the world to maybe consider sanctioning you. This is actually a significant change for Russia, which at the height of its Soviet power was not integrated into the global economy and so didn't have to worry about things like investor sentiment. But now it is and it does.

In the next 3-5 years, the US will be forced to realize this.


What's cool about this is that it theoretically could apply to lots of other possible acts of international aggression around the world. This is something that economists and political scientists have been predicting since World War One: that integrating all the national economies into the global economy wouldn't just make all of us richer, it would make war more economically painful for the people starting it and thus less likely to happen.

Which clause are you lol-ing at, or are you lol-ing at both? If the "makes us all richer" part, I certainly would agree with you. It may be making many countries richer but not necessarily individuals. If concerning the war part, I actually think the author has a point.
