Since when is peacekeeping the role of the US military? The purpose of the military is killing people and breaking things.

We aren't the world police and there is plenty of waste to be cut from the military. All depts should be cut

Since WWII. The purpose of the peacekeeper role is to stop dictators before they threaten world security. Unfortunately, it falls to us as one of the last superpowers. It was supposed to have been the U.N. but they have no balls.

It is a lot harder to ramp up military capabilities and training then what it is to hire government civilians for other departments. We are at pre-WWII levels. Do you recall how hard it was to ramp up our military for WWII? If everyone was cool with a draft the next time the proverbial shiz hits the fan, then cut away!

if truly needed for defense then it won't be an issue. If you're claiming we need a large military so we can intervene in every regional conflict then I'm fine with a small military. Besides, everyone having some skin in the game could keep us out of some future conflicts. Not a negative IMO

we're a little more capable than we were in 39 aren't we?

If this really came down to America/NATO vs Russia it'd truly be a sad day for Russia because let's be clear we've been in a constant war with others ever since 911. I'm reasonably certain that we're undeniable pros at it. All they've been doing is hoarding snow for Sochi and drinking vodka.

The Russians have pretty much be in a constant state of war since '94 as well in Chechnya and other post-Soviet regional conflicts.

Way, way, way different type of warfare that we've been involved in since 9/11 than we would see with the Russians.

Insurgencies and small unit actions are a completely different playbook than modern mechanized warfare against a military with somewhat comparable gear.

why is that the US can invade almost any country, Iraq, Granada, Panama, etc? but if Russia does the same thing, they are scoundrels? I don't see the diff.

One distinction is that Russia is flirting with annexing territory from another country, while the US was simply angling for a more friendly government.
