Ukraine Protests

This constant railing against American foreign meddling is pretty silly, given that American global influence has been in decline this decade.

But don't let facts get in the way of a good story.

The Russians remind me a lot of the Japanese when it comes to the historical memory of the war. Unlike the Germans, who have largely acknowledged what ****heads they were and feel extreme guilt about it, the Russians and Japanese still don't seem quite able or willing to do the same.

Admittedly, it's probably much more difficult for the Russians who, due to the Nazi invasion of the USSR, mostly see their nation as one that was unjustly wronged and then went on to save Europe from the same evil it had suffered. This is true, but it only tells half the story, and I am sorry to say, this other half is not a favorable one for Russia and its history.

Japan, I'm still not quite sure what its deal is.

I know it's often reductive, and even ridiculous at times, to make such comparisons (although, like Godwin says, someone eventually will) but the similarities, and even analogs, between 1930s Germany and contemporary Russia are quite startling. Of course, I think it's nonsense to believe a major war is going to start or especially a genocide, but what sometimes gives me a lot of pause and concern for the future is thinking about what comes after Putin's reign finally ends (whenever the hell that will be). I think there is a grave chance, even probability, that what comes after him will make us long for the good ole' halcyon days of Putin. That country is headed for some major internal problems, which will then have the ability to expand to major international ones. Remember, early to mid-90s Russia was never much more than a stone's throw away from being an internally fractured collection of nuclear states.

There's a reason why films like "Crimson Tide" and "Air Force One" were made and really weren't that silly, when you think about it. Well, okay, maybe "Air Force One" was a little silly but still pretty cool.

Russia hasn't figured it out quite yet (maybe in another millennium it will), but it's not the only nation on the continent of Europe.
