Tyson Helton's Questionable Decisions

IMHO, I think they're just trying to make sure they have an option if JG gets hurt.

I tend to agree.

I was critical of JG last year. I thought he had attitude problems as well as being overrated.

I was wrong. The kid has worked hard and really improved. I hope that continues but at this point I think he’s obviously the best option.

Seriously, what is this weak decision-making by Helton? Aren't we paying him like an elite coordinator? I think the horrible play calling speaks for itself, but I am baffled that we had the first chance to run a two-minute drill this year and gain some valuable experience and he takes Guarantano out on 2nd down, puts Chryst in and gives up on the drive. I am so confused and do not understand that logic.

Guarantano and the 1st team offense need as much practice together as possible for SEC play. Chryst should not see the field in this game until it is 35-0.

uhhh, no we aren't. he is not elite and was not before hiring. We could not entice an elite coordinator of any kind to come here. Give him time, he is learning and has very poor players to learn with

We stayed pretty conservative today offensively, had a couple great drives, others that were complete duds. I can't judge his playcalling yet, but today our biggest issue was the turnovers and penalties, we gained good yardage.

I don't think today is the day to judge play calling. There was a clear emphasis on running the ball specifically off tackle. I noted that every running back did a much better job of attacking the hole rather than bounding or trying to make a play outside of the play design. This was a scrimmage and the coaches took advantage by getting the backs and O-line reps that they are going to need and addressing some problems in the run game. The lack of a passing game was clearly intentional. The lack of play action was intentional . Relax , this is a building process. The coaches have to develop a lot of players and depth and it looks like they are working on it .

Questionable hire and one that will set Pruitt back on his rebuild. You couldn't ask for someone with more experience than Pruitt. Helton didn't deserve the money he got and when you see how his QB underperformed last year and is off to a nice start in the NFL, i question his acumen. Pruitt needed a mature, seasoned, play caller and offensive mind for this rebuild.

I believe our fanbase has been so use to having a joker for a head coach that many of our fans think the worse possibly outcome for every situation. I believe in Pruitt from an X and O standpoint. I know the guy knows football. I truly believe this staff wasn’t worried about about winning this game after the first quarter.

As for the QB change, I thing Pruitt is trying to simulate real live scenarios while the opportunity presents itself. Backup QBs have to be ready to go in at all times of the game. Pruitt throwing in a backup QB with two mins left after JG had played great is about as close to a real situation as you can get. I don’t think we will see this happen next week.

As for the play calling, it’s pretty clear that on 3rd and long we are throwing short passes or running the ball. Our OL is awful guys. We can’t protect JG long enough on 3rd and long when teams blitz us. In the coming weeks, it’s going to be very telling what we are as an offense. We have some good RBs and WRs, but our OL is very inconsistent. I think our best offense is short passes to open up the outside run. From there we can go play action, screens, and deep throws. I also think on 3rd and very long we may have to use 6 OL sets with Tatum lining up as a TE. For now, I expect us to nickle and dime our way down the field and punt when we have too. We will be conservative on 3rd and long until we can’t afford to be. We will try to limit turnovers and pray our defense can get stops. It’ll be ugly at times, but until our OL gets it tog, I expect us to be conservative and use the punt game.

Its difficult to make much of any conclusion from a tune up game like this. I think they tried to feed the running backs as much as possible to get their confidence up and work on a power run game. Going forward this team is going to be the underdog in the majority of games, so a power running game will be tremendously important going forward. If they have any chance of keeping it close against the top 10 teams they will be playing, they need to control the clock as much as possible and make sure they give the defense a break. So, in my opinion at least, I think the playcalling was more about prepping for later in the season than it was about the looks UTEP were giving them. JMO

I think Helton is getting a lot of uneccessary hate.

Remember, he’s still fairly young and learning the concept of our offense.

With Pruitt being a defensive mind, I don’t think he would have hired Helton if he didn’t think he was capable of calling the plays.

Helton's play calling was not an issue for me today. it seemed prerty obvious that we were using this game to tune up the O Line play and to work on some stuff offensively. I think we were treating it as an extended practice session. That said, the O Line was not very good at all. I did notice we are trying a lot of different personal groupings still trying to find the best 5. Drew Richmond continues to disappoint on the right side.

So we weren't playing Vanilla for Florida biut we WERE working on some basic techniques because that is exactly what we needed to do. Helton was calling the plays Pruitt wanted ran to develop certain things that this offense needs to work on. That is all.

This was a tune-up game. Try some new things, get the youngsters (not all at one time) some playing time, work on some different personnel groupings, as well as internal stuff with the coaches, come out with a win and get ready for SEC play. Nothing more, nothing less.

Yep. If we had a coaching staff full of VN members, we would win 10 straight NCs.

I've won 14 straight, simulating, in my current NCAA football dynasty on ps2. Yup. Kept a ps2 just so I could continue playing NCAA football dynasty in the falls.

Helton doesn't have confidence in this team...That much is obvious, He hardly ever lets them throw the ball downfield...He hasn't coached aggressively at all...Every game has been vanilla and boring.

It isn't Helton's fault our offensive lineman couldn't block an elderly, handicapped woman. I mean they can't even block against terrible defensive fronts much less good ones. That has a real tendency to limit your play calling abilities.
