Tyson Helton's Questionable Decisions

Helton doesn't have confidence in this team...That much is obvious, He hardly ever lets them throw the ball downfield...He hasn't coached aggressively at all...Every game has been vanilla and boring.

I cannot blame him if he doesnt have confidence. Especially when the OL struggles to dominate teams like ETSU.

He’s scum and shouldn’t be coaching anywhere at the college level
What’s does one moral report card have to do with coaching football? I’ve never understood this stance. It’s not 1950 anymore, we don’t have to act like everyone in the public eye has to be a saint.

This is what you get when both the head coach and offensive coordinator require on the job training, and the head coach has to hire a assistant whose sole job is to interpret what the offense is doing for him (true story).

Not surprising, UT tries to take football seriously but it hasn't in years. The coaching search was so inept that who knows what we truly have as a staff

Most of you forget the USC offense is student body left, student body right and then hit the open receiver...it helps when your RBs are OJ, Charles White, Marcus Allen, Sam Cunningham...etc.

Helton would not be the one to make that decision. Pruitt makes that call. I'm not sure why they did that either... but you can't blame it on Helton. I can't figure them running the ball either. The dropped pass finished the drive but with that much time... why not put a drive together?

They're committed to playing Chryst. You can read into that whatever you like... but they're going to play him.

One could easily assume with good reason that at some point in the next 2,3,4 games, JG goes down and we HAVE to play Chryst.

Helton is looking like the weakest link so far. We have the weapons on offense to be decent even with a bad run blocking OL. I feel that Pruitt wont be loyal to a fault and its waay early. See how it shakes out but the obvious narrative is Helton has a big ? over his head right now.

Maybe, but it's way too early to put that ? mark up just yet, imo.

They had 259 yards in the 1st half. Not sure why you are blaming Helton for penalties and fumbles. Besides, I seriously doubt they are going to show much except for vanilla offense today.

Last 2 plays they have thrown bombs down the field and cannot connect.

Thank you. I was reading all these complaints thinking "did I watch the same game?" We had over 500 yards of offense ( I know it's UTEP) . Not saying I agreed every call, but penalties and turnovers kept the score from being more than it was.

We averaged 10+ per attempt today. That's not exactly dink and dunk football.

Seriously, what is this weak decision-making by Helton? Aren't we paying him like an elite coordinator? I think the horrible play calling speaks for itself, but I am baffled that we had the first chance to run a two-minute drill this year and gain some valuable experience and he takes Guarantano out on 2nd down, puts Chryst in and gives up on the drive. I am so confused and do not understand that logic.

Guarantano and the 1st team offense need as much practice together as possible for SEC play. Chryst should not see the field in this game until it is 35-0.
I was at the game today right behind the players in row 7. JG came out because his shoe came off. What kills me is putting Chryst in to only run the ball. He needs reps, but not handing the ball off for 20-30 mins. Everyone was off today, Calloway was a step slow, struggled on punt returns. Smith got beat a few times, defense struggles to get pressure and when they do,They are too slow, or can't finish the tackle. No discipline today. Way too many flags. I think its Flowers ? 28 at cb? He tries to get a running start before the qb snaps the ball, not knowing what the wr is doing. I don't understand this. No one else was picking his guy up either, so I don't think it's by design. Team lacks effort. Was dissapointed overall with today's performance

28 is Baylen Buchanan, and I agree he looks lost a lot.

Inagree, my comments aren't an an attempt to put an indictment on Helton. Just saying from a coaching standpoint he has the biggest question mark over his head right now. We'll find out more in the coming weeks

So many knuckleheads posting about play calling like they understand the coaches big picture plan. I don't even pretend to know but I know this:

1) it is better to have a serviceable backup that has had meaningful snaps than to try prove you can tack on 3 points or a touchdown in a game that is never in doubt and,

2) we have talked time and time again how the SEC is a line of scrimmage league. UT has at least two new starters in the lineup that can use snaps run blocking. Also, Florida has given up 222 rushing yards to Charlston Southern and 303 rushing yards to Kentucky before just giving up 70 to a Colorado State team that's only rushed for 116, 103 and 40 yards in its first 3 games. They will have to prove they can stop the Vols run game next week. Again this is where OL reps in the run game are important.
