Troy Calhoun (merged)

Be ready for the recruits to drop like flies if he is hired. I would rather have Fulmer than Calhoun

Wow, there have been all kinds of crazy posts on this board over the years. That one ranks right up there with some of the craziest. His name wont win a press conference. And he would not be my first choice. But he is a very good football coach.

First I don't want Calhoun as our next coach but some positives about this guy is that he is very disciplined and values tradition. Also he WILL NOT RUN THE TRIPLE OPTION AT TENNESSEE. He has coached other teams than Air Force. He is running the triple option there because he inherited a bunch of white boys running 4.9 40's. He had to.

This guy is a good coach and has coached for the Broncos and the Texans. He does run the triple option at Air Force but with our personel, I dont think that he will come in and try to run it here. At least the guy seems to have good character and wont screw the Volnation like Lame. He is not my first choice but I will stand behind him and give him a chance.

As a Titans fan I can assure you that he didn't do squat in Houston.

how much moonshine were you all drinking last night (this morning).....the triple option is something ran by lesser schools with lesser talent; that garbage will not work for very long at Georgia Tech...w/i 2 years he's gone; recruiting will be a nightmare; this has to be a joke...there is nobody better quailified to coach UT??????? This is what we are to accept???? MOVE OVER KENTUCKY AND VANY, A NEW SCHOOL IS MOVING IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD!

why no discussion about Butch Davis...great recruiter and very good w. X's and O's

I believe that it is a mandate....
If you coach at a service academy, you must run the option. The only way you can be competitive.

Sorry but if they guy isn't bringing anything new to the table meaning he will have to change his offense to come here than I would prefer Kippy. If we're just looking for a face of the program and plan on utilizing our assistants more than Kippy makes more sense.

this captured from espn.com (yeah, yeah, I know) about 5 min. ago. I don't subscribe to their premium thing, so I can't read the article, but it caught my eye..

We do that and we'll lose lots of recruits...Corey Miller's Facebook status is legit. I saw it too.

Exactly!! Talent dictates that you do. Same reason Meyer ran the spread in Utah. Meyer doesnt need the spread to win in Florida, its just what offense he is comfortable running. Meyer will be forced to go to a more pro-style offense this year, because the talent on the team will dictate that.

A bevy of reports suggest that Air Force coach Troy Calhoun could now be the leading candidate. Wes Rucker of the Chattanooga Times Free Press writes that several sources say that Vols officials either have met with or plan to meet with Calhoun, who supposedly was their second choice a year ago behind Lane Kiffin. When reached by the Denver Post's Irv Moss on Wednesday night, Calhoun made the standard nondenial denial, and then said, "No comment," when asked if he had been contacted by anyone representing Tennessee. Coincidentally (or not), athletic director Mike Hamilton had spent Tuesday in Denver "to meet with one of our major corporate partners."

From ESPN...

So...people are okay with Sumlin, but against Calhoun??? I don't get it.
Didn't Air Force blow Houston out this year?

He ran Pro-style offense at Denver, Houston, Miami, Wake Forrest. Air Force is the only school he has ran the option. He changed his offense because that is what those players were used to running. He will run his choice of offense, Pro-Style, at UT.

I guess when we start the triple option we won't have to worry about getting nervous when someone throws the ball... Then again probably won't have to worry about being nervous in any games of significance either for some time...

I dont think the rest of the SEC would rejoice, TC is believed to be a pretty good coach. I know everyone has a hard on cause he runs the option, but since he cant really recruit, he has few other options...

I am not a fan of Fulmer, but I think he would be a better coach than Calhoun at this point. At least he knows the area to recruit and is respected by quite a few people. Honestly I don't want either one, but if I had to choose I would go Fulmer over Calhoun at this point. If it gets to this point, we are in a sad state anyway.

For the 4742th time, he won't run the option here. He runs it at Air Force because it's Air Force. He was an NFL coordinator and OC at Wake Forrest in the early 2000's.

He might be one heck of a choice given the time to rebuild. He just wouldn't be a "big splash". There wouldn't be a ground swell of optimism for UT football with this hire. As unfair as that may be.

What if Calhoun gets hired, he installs the triple option at UT...and it works? It would be funny to see what the people making anti-Calhoun statements are saying then.

Paul Johnson installed the triple option at Georgia Tech and won the conference in two years. (Yeah, I know, it's the ACC...) Georgia Tech will never be a contender for a national title, but that's not because of their offense. Their defense is suspect, and to be successful running the flexbone you have to have a great defense. That's the formula Nebraska rode to success for years under Osborne, and Tennessee has the defense to be able to replicate that success.

The one advantage a triple option brings is that no one in the major conferences see it anymore, so you automatically have the advantage of surprise. It's hella tough to run with your scout team, and defending it goes against the grain of what college defenses have been doing for the last decade.

It might not be that exciting to watch, but I'm guessing if Tennessee managed 10 wins running it then all this triple option griping would fade pretty quickly...
