Troy Calhoun (merged)

He hasn't even done that well at Air Force. Ga Tech fails agaisnt anyone with time to prepare.

I think Air Force finished just behind TCU and Utah in the MWC this year. They blew out Houston, and lost to TCU by only three points. Remember, he did that without being able to recruit football players. Imagine what he could do with the opportunity to recruit under the Tennessee name.
He didn't run the option at Wake, did he?

On the field at the same time... just think about that for a minute.

I find it funny for myself to see so many people claiming to bail on UT if they hire Calhoun just because he runs the triple option. Who's to say he'd bring it to UT in the first place...but I find it ironic that everyone just assumes that it won't work despite what Paul Johnson has done at Ga. Tech and what Navy has been able to sustain after he left there.

As you can tell from my name, I follow Georgia Southern and our fan base just went through the opposite of what's going on here. We ran PJ's triple option from our first football season in 1984 till 2005. In that time we became the most dominant team in 1-aa, 6 National Championships and numerous SoCon Championships. In 2006 our AD fired our coach and brought in Brian Van Gorder who scrapped the triple option and went 3-8. The next coach ran the same offense as Mike Leach and went 7-4, 6-5 and 5-6. The fans have been going nuts asking to return to the triple option.

Our new coach this year was one of PJ's assistants and we're going back to the 3-O. The fans couldn't be happier.

The 3-O works in I-A ball...it'll work in the SEC too.

i hope so, because he is going to be our next head coach. we won't have a winning season for 7 years. he is not the coach to take us to the next level.

when was the last time Navy beat SEC caliber competition? ga tech beat georgia last season, but then proceded to get steamrolled by LSU in the CFA bowl, and get beat by a horrible georgia team this year. the triple option is however capable of beating miss st. and vandy, so that would be something to look forward to.

Uuhhh...Didn't he beat us with that dreadful offense.

"The spread option will never work in the SEC"

Don't count your chickens before they hatch.

and that is the interesting part.

even with the "dream team" recruiting for us, we were ranked what, 4-5th or so in the SEC in recruiting?

the way things are stacked against us, it is going to be very, very hard to out-athlete the rest of the SEC consistently.

but what if we had a coach/system that didn't require landing the absolute best of the best?

He would never run the triple option at Tenn.

He was a NFL O-coordinator, when will some of you people wake up to that?

Thank you! People are so caught up on what air force used to run they dont even know what they're talking about. 1st off that air force option should have beat us a couple years ago and secondly this coach doesnt run the option I dont believe. I'm thinking he runs a pro style offence.

That's why I liked Brian Kelly so much. He finds a way to win with whatever he's got. That's what we need...a guy who can get great things out of 3* players. I never was convinced that Kiffin was all that good of a gameday coach. He could just recruit the best athletes.
If we've got a guy who can win with any level of talent, then maybe the better athletes will eventually just come to him?

Exactly. He would run a pro-style offense a UT.

Plus, I this is the kind of MAN (not petulent boy) you can build a program around. I am sure that his leadership skills are off the charts.

And finally, having his record with Air Force recruits is remarkable. The Mountain West is a decent conference and he has played teams with pretty good talent (TCU, BYU and Utah).

Never posted before. You guys are correct. We would probably not get the athletes that are 5 stars, like....
Nukeese or Edwards...where are they now? These guys would not want to play for a coach like Calhoun because he don't run his mouth enough. What about Nick Reveiz? How many stars was he? I would like to have a field full of this type player with his heart and effort.
Calhoun has pro experience and I think other posters are right when saying he only runs the triple option because of the type players AF has available.

This guy is a good coach and has coached for the Broncos and the Texans. He does run the triple option at Air Force but with our personel, I dont think that he will come in and try to run it here. At least the guy seems to have good character and wont screw the Volnation like Lame. He is not my first choice but I will stand behind him and give him a chance.

This.

I don't care who the coach is as long as they are a stand up individual, and I really don't think he would do anything close to betraying us. Seems like a good guy.
