'26 Transfer QB options

Yeah he doesnt really have the luxury of gambling on him being ready next season.

If GMac isn't ready next year, that is no one's fault but Heupel. He had the final 4 games and 8 weeks of practice to get him heavy course load of reps.

But regardless of that, I prefer we go to the portal for our QB's going forward.

I wonder about the QB situation. Now I don’t know for sure, I really don’t know anything. But hear me out. It seems that, at least we think, we aren’t being that aggressive on the QB front. So could it be that Heupel somehow knows what’s gonna happen with Joey? Meaning maybe he knows that Joey is coming back?

I know that sounds dumb. But is that even a possibility?
Since we're waiting for a judge to make a ruling, I don't know how that would be possible.

Maybe Heupel's in a situation that prohibits paying top dollar for a QB again? Doubt many deep pocketed boosters will be willing to extend that kind of money to Heupel again after the Nico fiasco.

I suspect it's a combination of the budget along with the fact he already has 2 highly paid kids in the room right now. At some point, the money tree will insist that Heupel show some kind of return for the investments that have already been made. Put up or shut up time for Heupel? All I know is he'd better be right about his decision to roll with Halzle instead of getting an experienced, proven OC/QB coach to groom the talent already in the room.

Yeah I refuse to believe our coach is going to leave his own fate in the hands of Gmac. That’s so risky
You assume he has a choice. There's a lot of money invested in two young QBs in that room. Boosters might be wanting to see some sort of ROI. They didn't pay for a guy(s) to sit for 2-3 years.

I would hope the business savvy boosters are smart enough to know that want money thrown at the QB position would be for portal guys and not high school recruits.

The portal isn’t closed. Any number of QBs could enter at any time before it closes. And we can be back-channeling with their agents. So a kid might already have a deal in place to go to UT then enter.
That's how a smart coaching staff would handle this portal era. Won't ask the obvious question though. Way too negative.

Still not understanding the Halzle questions.

If the offense sucked I would get it. It did not. He got Joey ready in months. What are you questioning?

Amen. The hype of Joey Aguilar is how he came to Tennessee due to the unprecedented NIL/Portal event with Nico in the spring.

But when it comes down to brass tax, he had a marginally better production year over Joe Milton's 2023 season where we also went 8-4. We won't miss him.
Im going to guess you’re not a big fan of “showing your work”

Well, I'm sure they're remembering Nico, Merk, GMac and Brandon. Perhaps they've finally learned or they're refusing to extend even more capital to Heupel based on his history to date? I know I'd not be rushing to write him yet another big check for the same position given the ROI so far.

Are you serious? I have been adamant and have posted countless times the comparisons. But will repost it again...

Joey had better passing (yards and touchdowns), Milton's better rushing and lack of turnovers pretty much neutralized that.

Joe and Joey were basically the same QB. No one was clamoring "I wish we had Joe back another year" in 2024. I doubt people will be saying that about Aguilar in 2026 if he isn't here.

Right. I just think we are going to get away from the days of guys like Arch, Ty Simpson, and others that are highly ranked recruits going somewhere and waiting their time to play and develop in a system. Maybe Gmac is that way, but I find it hard to fathom he stays here if the plan for 2026 is Joey getting another year or a one year portal rental and then hand it off to Faizon. There's no reason from him to stay really.

So he was as productive in a matter of like 6 months as a guy who was in the system for 3 years?

Seems pretty good to me 🤷🏻‍♂️

First, no one believes Halzle is the real OC. Second, Aguilar was seasoned and experienced. It gave Heupel and Halzle a head start in getting him up to speed because he'd been a starter and under live fire. What we have now is raw as raw can be. Forget GMacs class standing. The kid has the barest threads of real experience. Brandon may have been hot stuff in HS, but that schedule next year will have that kids head swimming.

If they do pull the trigger on a QB from the portal, I'd be floored if it's announced prior to the portal closing. No way Heupel would do that would he?

Vol fans continue to be the only ones not impressed by Halzle’s work with Joey + input on the offense

I have been adamant that Heupel hasn't been the greatest manager at making things easier for himself. However, I don't believe he is on a hot, warm, preheating, broiling seat or anywhere close to one.

The good news is he has matured a bit and has made tough decisions he hasn't really shown he has done before with this staff and maybe to a degree the roster running some guys off.

I would have a lot of concerns over his decision making if he stakes his QB position for 2026 on the courts making a ruling. That case isn't going to get settled quickly. Could Aguilar win? Sure. But pinning the 2026 starting QB on a coinflip when there are options available that don't present a drop off at all to Joey + Heupel's ability to develop QB's seems risky and a self inflicteed wound if it doesn't all align.

The bonus about this portal class is there are plenty of QB's with multiple years left.

You think 600 yards passing in marginally better? More yards, more touchdowns, better completion percentage, better QBR.

Overall, Aguilar was 430 yards better from production. He also had twice as many turnovers.

Once again, his lore in Tennessee history is how he came here in the spring and made it work… not that he had some super duper spectacular year that was unheard of.

8-4 record, within 500 yards overall with Milton, double the turnovers.

Plenty of guys in the portal who are just as good or better. Yawn.

631 passing yards, 5 more interceptions than Joe, 3 percent completion points better, and 1/6 of the time in the offense. No one is saying Joey is Peyton Manning, but he’s night and day a better option than Joe was.

Also, i should have known the moment you agreed with @LittleVol that this would be a waste of time. But here i am
