Having thought about these tariffs, I come down to this:
Everyone against Trump's tariffs say they are "bad." Everyone for Trump's tariffs say they are "good."
The truth is, all Trump is doing is messing with the degrees of tariffs. Tariffs existed before Trump. If they are bad now, why weren't people crowing about tariffs before Trump? Similarly, high tariffs are good now, why do we ever want to lower them in negotiations?
I believe tariffs to only be beneficial and effective when applied to nascent industries. Otherwise, for established industry, I do not like tariffs and wish we could have "free trade," as I believe that best for the consumer. However, I also understand the US can't be the only country in the world following such policy, so we must have tariffs if other countries do.
None of us know how this will play out. All of us should hope that it ends up well. Unfortunately, Left wants Trump to fail, period, even if it hurts Americans. Their opposition is to the person implementing the tariffs, not the policy itself. That is a dangerous, self-destructive mentality.
Sadly, where that leaves us is that, even in the event tariffs are successful (which they will not be, though trade negotiations based off the threat or implementation of the tariffs may be), and American businesses and industries boom, all we will hear about is how "middle America" got crushed by Trump and his "Wall Street Cronies" once again.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
