Trade Wars and Tariffs

The middle class the common folk don’t give a crap about the stock market

This is interesting to read seeing as how pensions no longer exist (only 15% of workers have a defined retirement plan) and everyone's retirement, no matter the class, is wrapped up in a 401k model aka the market.

He was doing well until 1:30 but then jumped the rails. Our share of PRC's exports is just 15% so we can't shut down their economy by ourselves, and Xi will have popular support if there's conflict with the US.

Exactly. Given that Trump has basically picked a fight with the entire world, a large coalition of other nations will be rooting for China to make Trump back down.

as is the issue with most of what Trump does he goes all in on something that is either all or nothing.

couldn't take measured steps. is trying to eat the elephant in one big bite.

its flashy, he gets to sell it to his constituents as being tough and "doing something". even though the chances of him "doing something" actually being successful is pretty dang low.

Biden isn’t President anymore. President Trump still has a long way to go to match the dipshitery of the last 4 years.

trump owns 100% of this, it was a unilateral move on his part to start a trade war.

MAGA can try to blame Biden but everyone outside of the MAGA cult understands this is solely on trump.

China is a lot like Enron. They have artificially been propping up their economy.

I don't think they can sustain this for long. Xi is on thin ice with his own party.

Interesting to see how this plays out.

I wonder if this is end up isolating China while other nations negotiate better deals or free trade

Definitely interesting to play out geopolitically. I would also say the opposite could happen. This could solidify his support because the enemy has attacked them "first".

Either way we should tariff China. China is the right target for tariffs. The EU, Canada, Israel, uninhabited islands, etc are the true problem.

Granted I’m very open to tariffing EU members such as Germany if they continue purchasing Russian oil

He is…..? Never heard this before. In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s been reported on that he’s gotten rid of everybody in his way to attaining absolute power, much like Putin has. Would like to see a source.

Regardless I disagree with you overall. China isn’t going to back down even if they can’t sustain it. Not only did we strike first, but there’s the whole saving face mentality Asia has. To back down would cause China to lose face, and that alone means China ain’t gonna back down. At least not anytime soon.

This is just a straight up losing game.

I think the question boils down to which nation can better weather economic hardship.

The US has been spoiled with cheap stuff for a long time. China has become more so in recent years with many of their population enjoying a significantly higher standard of living.

China has been authoritarian for a long time... the US more so in recent months.

No one cares about immigrants but racist. Immigrants are not taking jobs. I've not yet met a newly arrived immigrant that is doing research, accounting, surgery, or any other specialized job. I have met immigrants that build houses and cut grass and perform other services/jobs that American citizens won't do. Their work keeps the country running.
This is an incredibly short sighted statement 🙄

On the bright side goobers, I think your pork rinds and Mt. Dew are both made in America. So your Tour de Heart Disease and Diabetes can continue unabated.
