Trade Wars and Tariffs

There's some exaggeration here (i.e., one hour of actual work), but this is something to think about.

If we were totally reliant on things made in the U.S. (as some claim we should be), what would our standard of living actually be?

USA actually works longer hours than most of the globe:

Now keep in mind it matters on jobs. Actually small business owners and retailers work the most hours sometime. So Greece, which has a lot of small businesses and tourist jobs, actually one of the European nations that works the longest hours.

However, in the Corporate world, USA holds its own with anyone. For example, in nations like China, they literally don't let you take the Computer home unless you are an executive. Japan also encourages workers to stop working after 8-hours due to overtime laws in their nations that require companies to pay more. USA has no laws and people work 10-11 hours a day sometimes.

When you depend on your biggest rival for medicine and chips you need to be more than just a service economy. Not all manufacturers need to come back but some absolutely must return
A national security issue?

Allowing millions of people to walk through their country on the way to the banks of the Rio Grande. Does that seem logical for an ally?
No one cares about immigrants but racist. Immigrants are not taking jobs. I've not yet met a newly arrived immigrant that is doing research, accounting, surgery, or any other specialized job. I have met immigrants that build houses and cut grass and perform other services/jobs that American citizens won't do. Their work keeps the country running.

LOL. We can't. He's still sharp as a tack even though his efforts are bad.
What gives you the impression that he's sharp as a tack. Nothing that he's said or done scream.genius or intelligence. Maybe he's smarter than you, and that is scary.

If you don't understand the joke, it would be better to ask for explanation than to attack. One fosters dialogue. The other shuts it down.

That's an interesting take on China and Japan. You know we have labor laws regarding overtime, right?

It varies on state by state but for Corporate jobs, you don't get overtime as they are salaried positions. I work more than 8 hours and I don't get extra for it.

Now with labor jobs, sure. I would say that from a manufacturing setup, the labor does only work 8-hours. Finding good labor will be a problem. The key with these tariffs is that I think they will save jobs from being lost versus giving us more jobs. However, the push with so many countries is problematic. Countries like Costa Rica should not have been hit. EU thing will get messy. EU fight is more about conservative vs liberal than anything.

Some years ago immigrants from Central America did take many building trade and unskilled jobs from the native born in the DC area. I don't see how that could have been the only place it happened.

We are more than a service economy. We manufacture 16% of the world's manufacturing output, second only to China.
