Trade Wars and Tariffs

Easy prediction. Everybody agrees to return to status quo and trump claims victory.

Agreed. He’s going to get a couple of minor/meaningless things in return and declare victory. I’m investing like that’s what is going to happen anyway

It’s dumb. But I’ll just be glad to see this end.

My worry is that he rescinds the tariffs too late (lets say he does at all) but the companies won't actually lower prices in response to the tariffs going away. Sooooo the prices stick kinda like they have since 2021.

There's some exaggeration here (i.e., one hour of actual work), but this is something to think about.

If we were totally reliant on things made in the U.S. (as some claim we should be), what would our standard of living actually be?

Meanwhile, nobody cares about crypto anymore. Interesting that gold is up about 5% in the 30 day chart while Bitcoin is down over 10%.

A quick google search returned multiple 2025 Tahoes in Norway for under 1MM krone. That's less than $90k. Peter Sweden is FOS.
And a quick search in East TN shows Tahoe pricing is $56K to $96K, so a fully loaded gas guzzler might bring $175K with fees

Just a few years after Trump himself renegotiated NAFTA (in his first term) he was out again crying about how terrible it is that Canada and Mexico are ripping us off.

Is that logical?

Sure, it’s not. But it seems odd to use an illogical means to make a prediction.

I don’t think it would be logical to assume Trump will piss on the whitehouse lawn tomorrow morning. But I also wouldn’t claim:

He does illogical things, so he’ll probably piss on the lawn tomorrow morning

Tweets need sensationlism to be noticed. There is no doubt the tweeter used the most expensive trim level to give the tweet some zing.

By the way, did you account for the taxes paid at purchase? There are 3: one off registration tax, VAT, and scrap deposit tax. The one off is tiered based on weight, CO2 emissions. I suspect the Tahoe is in a high tax tier.

What would be the difference if I did? Norway doesn't have an extra VAT on foreign vehicles that are sold in Norway. So, any price increase due to importing is already baked in. Norway's combined taxes on vehicles might be high, but they are high no matter where the vehicle was produced.

The point is that the tweet is trying to make an argument about Norwegian escalations on imports that simply do not exist.

Oh, sorry. Didn't mean to touch on something sensitive. My reply was simply added for conversation.

I don't care about the tweet, the tariffs, or how the board feels about them.

He called NAFTA a terrible deal. Ever so slightly changed it. Called it the greatest deal. Then didn't remember he had anything to do with it a few short years later. And MFs in here trust him with the economy. It makes no sense

If there's one thing you can predict about him, it's that he hates trade deficits/loves tariffs. It doesn't matter to him what the trade rules are.

So it's all about cheap stuff then. You don't GAF about American jobs. Gotcha.

So much for lefties being the workers party, amiright?

We are a service-oriented economy. Nothing wrong with that.

Why do the Trump defenders feel compelled to ignore this reality and instead crush the US and world economies based on some foolish notion of returning us to manufacturing when, even if you did so, IT WOULDN'T WORK?

When you depend on your biggest rival for medicine and chips you need to be more than just a service economy. Not all manufacturers need to come back but some absolutely must return

Allowing millions of people to walk through their country on the way to the banks of the Rio Grande. Does that seem logical for an ally?
