Trade Wars and Tariffs

You guys keep saying this, as it's some defense to to Trump's idiocy, but in 8 years of Obama, and 4 of Biden, they didn't employ the dumbest method of tariffing ever devised.
I understand what he is trying to do but why does he always have to go to the extreme? What's wrong with moderation? Even Musk thinks he has gone too far! I personally doubt it works.

This is where you apply Trump's Razor. The stupidest explanation is likely the correct one.

Consistency is impossible when you don't know what you're trying to accomplish.

Or when you’re so scattered that you’re trying to accomplish far too many things all through this one policy. Here’s a list of things Trump has claimed he intends to correct through tarrifs.

1. Fentanyl
2. Immigration
3. Return factory jobs
4. Lower tariffs from other countries
5. Lower other trade barriers (taxes, etc)
6. Improve trade deficits
7. Pay back for money sent as aid to other countries

That’s just off the top of my head. I’m sure there’s some I’ve missed

On the bright side goobers, I think your pork rinds and Mt. Dew are both made in America. So your Tour de Heart Disease and Diabetes can continue unabated.
Wrong. Their meds will cost so much that they won’t be able to afford rinds and Mountain Dew.

Do I understand that Peter Navarro is one of the architects of this mess? My understanding is that in the previous Trump term, they would purposely not invite him to meetings to limit the injection of excess stupidity. Now he’s in charge of trade policy? That seems par for the course with Trump’s choices of leg humpers for his inner circle.

I don’t agree with Elon on much but he hit the nail on the head with Navarro. “Dumb as a sack of bricks”. I hope for a lot of people’s sake that this somehow works out but I ain’t holding my breath.

China is a lot like Enron. They have artificially been propping up their economy.

I don't think they can sustain this for long. Xi is on thin ice with his own party.

Interesting to see how this plays out.

I wonder if this is end up isolating China while other nations negotiate better deals or free trade
Not really. Their economy has really developed in the last few decades and they now have a sizeable middle class hence considerable domestic demand. Have you ever thought about whether the US artificially props up our economy, just for comparison?
Xi's not on thin ice. He recently purged potential rivals and can turn conflict with the US to his political advantage.

Verizon sent an email just last Thursday saying you can trade in any Apple, Google or Samsung phone (even old or broken) for a new one on Verizon. This was also part of their lock of rates for 3 years. I bet they're regretting that move today.
VZ paying a 6.3% dividend at the current price.

trump owns 100% of this, it was a unilateral move on his part to start a trade war.

MAGA can try to blame Biden but everyone outside of the MAGA cult understands this is solely on trump.
I don't think anyone is blaming Puddinhead for this.

The only place Navarro belongs is in a remake of Glengarry Glen Ross. Selling timeshares should have been his place.

A targeted tariff to address a specific issue (every dumping example in econ classes was Canadian lumber) and look what it did to the pricing. Now place a tariff on all goods and what do we expect to happen?
again, where was the 'outrage' from the left when Biden double the tarriff raising cost of construction?

Trump is using tarriffs as leverage to get Canada to lower its predatory triple digit tarriffs.

All you on the left are convinced this is the end of everything so what happens in 6 months to a year and the US comes through it as Trump says stronger and better off as before?
