Tony Vitello to SF Giants (Confirmed)

I have great hope that this thread can get up to 250,000 replies and put the BaseVols forum ahead of the Around the NCAA forum
This thread’s post count will probably pass the Vols in MLB one tomorrow. After that it’s got a while to catch a Portal Activity thread that swerved drunkenly into talking about Porter Wagoner and Cas Walker. It’s getting up there, as non game threads go.

It would be hard to turn down. It’s everyone’s dream to play at the highest level. And this isn’t the Marlins or another organization where you don’t have a chance. He could win big there. If it goes well, he could be the first coach/manager to win both a Ccollege and MLB World Series. If it doesn’t, he could name his college job again in 2-3 years.

I'm gonna be real with you here and tell you that this is at least 40% of the reason that I don't want to see him go. For most major sports coaches its not if you get fired, its when. Could be 3 years, could be 20--but Tony V. doing a few years there and getting canned only to come play against us in the SEC as an opposing coach is the most Tennessee thing ever, and you know its likely.

I doubt he goes back to a college team. He'd probably just go to another MLB team as a bench coach or somewhere in the minors.

He’s got plenty of wise counsel available to him. Folks i hope he talks to before making his final decision:

Bruce Bochy
Dusty Baker
AJ Hinch
Craig Counsel
Phil Garner
Rick Barnes

…kind of in that order.

Also….One of his best friends is Jayce Tingler who managed the Padres in 2020-2021. He’s now the bench coach for the Twins. He was a teammate of CTV at Mizzou.

Billy Martin says hold my beer…

Anyone more in the know than I am, are they scheduled to have a practice today? Scrimmage? Off day?

Just curious if he’s scheduled to be on campus today or if we’ll have no idea
