October 13, 1990......

The Vols hosted the #9 Gators. The first half was a defensive struggle with UT leading 7-3. Dale Carter received the second half kickoff and zigzagged his way 90 yrds for a touchdown, opening the floodgates. Tony Thompson ran for 103 yrds and a TD and Carl Pickens caught a 47 yrd touchdown from TE Von Reeves in the Vols 45-3 thumping of the Gators.

What is crazy about that game is that Florida was our Homecoming game that year.

There have been times when UT has scheduled SEC opponents on homecoming weekend. One year, it was Georgia. I like it. Patsies for a guaranteed victory isn't in all ways admirable, though the PTBs want alumni (donors and potential donors) to leave happy to have participated. A football victory goes a long way towards keepin' 'em happy.

October 15, 1983......

The Vols traveled to Birmingham to play #11 Alabama. Alan Cockrell threw for 292 yrds and 3 TDs and rushed for 1 TD. His touchdown passes were 80, 80, and 57 yrds. With the game tied at 34 all with 3 minuets left, Johnnie Jones took a 3rd down pitch and raced 66 yards for the clinching score. The 41-34 Vols victory was the second in a row over the hated Tide.

Too easy.....

The #2 ranked Tide came to the World’s Fair to play the 2-2-1 Vols riding an eleven game winning streak in the series. Down 14-3, Willie Gault caught a 52 yrd touchdown to gain some momentum. Up 27-21 in the fourth, Chuck Coleman took a handoff and raced 34 yrds to the end zone. The two pt conversion put the Vols up 35-21. Bama would cut the lead to seven and got the ball back late. With 17 seconds left, Mike Terry picked off a tipped pass in the end zone to secure the victory.

Bear Bryant lost his last game vs UT and said,”The folks in Knoxville are happy. The folks who graduated from Tennessee are happy. The folks who live in Tennessee are happy. And all those folks have every right to be happy. They lined up and beat us.”

I was at that game, one of the greatest moments of my life. We finally beat Bama after 11 years of suffering.

October 17, 1970.........

Before a record Neyland Stadium crowd, the Tide came to Knoxville for the annual rivalry game. For the first time since 1959, the Tide were shut out. The Vols were led by their All-American Jackie Walker and Tim Priest. Walker picked off two passes (returning one for a 22 yrd TD) and Priest picked off THREE passes in the 24-0 victory. For the game, the Vols had eight interceptions.

For the record.....Walker is probably the most under appreciated Vol in history. Look up the stats for the 2x All American.

October 18, 1969......

In Doug Dickey’s final year as UT Coach, the Vols traveled to Birmingham to face the Tide and a record crowd at Legion Field. Bobby Scott was named Southeast Offensive player of the week for his 2TDS, but the game will always be remembered as Steve Kiner’s day! The All American and SEC Defensive Player of the Year had 11 tackles and 3 Assists, 5 tackles for loss, an interception, a caused fumble, and 4 other QB pressures. His efforts earned him National Lineman of the Week by SI and the AP. Bobby Majors also returned a punt for a TD and Jackie Walker returned an interception for a touchdown in the Vols 41-14 victory!

Yes. he and Branndon Stewart split playing time after Jerry Colquitt got his knee blown out.

All the fanboys declared Stewart to be the far superior qb and derided Cutcliff and Fulmer for playing Manning in front of him.

In his first career start, Tony Robinson completed 13 of 16 passes and Johnnie Jones ran for 203 yards and 3TDs in the Vols 34-27 opening day win vs Washington State.

October 19, 1968........

Richmond Flowers scored from the one yrd line on the Vols first drive and Karl Kremser kicked an SEC record 54 yrd FG to give the Vols a 10-3 lead over Alabama. With one minute left, Bama scored and went for two, but the conversion failed. Bama recovered an onside kick and had a FG attempt to win. The kicked was blocked by Jimmy Weatherford, securing the Vols 10-9 victory. Weatherford was named Southern player of the week by the AP and UPI.

October 20, 1984........

Trailing 27-13 with 5 minuets left, the Vols woke up and the unexpected happened. Tony Robinson hit Tim McGee from 17 yrds out to cut the lead to 7. Then the defense came through holding Bama and forced a punt. Andre Creamer returned the punt to the Tide 11 yrd line. Three plays later Johnnie Jones scored and the scene was set. Majors decided to go for two and the win. Robinson faked a pitch to Jones and cut inside for the conversion. Moments later, Tommy Simms’ interception sealed the 28-27 victory.

Well I was at this game so let me tell what really happened. Manning came in for one series after Colquitt got hurt. Coaches gave up on that real quick and played Todd Helton the rest of the game. I don't remember Stewart playing a single down.

I remember watching that game and yes, he did put Stewart in the game.

October 21, 1967.......

in front of 72,000 people in Birmingham, the Vols face Bama and their 25 game winning streak. 3rd string qb, Bubba Wyche, got the start due to injuries and led the team like a veteran. Sophomores Steve Kiner, Jack Reynolds, and Mike Jones led the defense with All American Al Dorsey. Walter Chadwick ran for a TD and threw a touchdown pass in the 23-14 victory. Al Dorsey intercepted 3 Ken Stabler passes and returned the last one 31 yrds for a TD to secure the win!

On October 21st 1939 Tennessee beat Alabama 21-0 in Neyland Stadium. Tennessee running back Johnny Butler had a legendary touchdown run. Tennessee finished 1939 10-1 and Alabama finished 1939 with a 5-3-1 record.

I attended the 1990 Cotton Bowl. My friend's younger sister was at a concession stand. She wasn't wearing either team's colors. Two older Vol alums were in line behind her. They asked her for which team she was rooting. When she replied, Tennessee, they paid her tab. GBO.
