October 2, 1976........

21 second quarter points were enough as the Vols Defense came up with a pair of 2pt conversion stops and a timely interception late to hold on to a 21-19 victory over Clemson.
Larry Seivers tied a then record of 11 receptions for 131 yrds and a touchdown.

The Cadets of West Point visited Knoxville in week 3. Bobby Scott led the Vols to 21 points and turned over the duties to sophomore Dennis Chadwick. The unknown QB led the Vols to three more TDs. He threw 2 TDs, one to Merlyn Hood, in the Vols 48-3 victory. Hood (who in 1972 tied the world record in the 50 yrd dash at 5.1) only caught two passes in 1970, but both were touchdowns.

On October 3rd 1942 Tennessee played the Fordham Rams in Neyland Stadium and came away with a 40-14 win. Tennessee finished the 1942 season with 9-1-1 record(which included a 14-7 win over Tulsa in the 1943 Sugar Bowl) while Fordham finished 1942 with a 5-3-1 record.

Tulsa was a national power between 1942 and 1944(They went to the 1943 Sugar Bowl,1944 Sugar Bowl and the 1945 Orange Bowl) and they were helped considerably by the Navy's V12 program which sent college football and NFL players to get naval officers training at Tulsa while they played football. Georgia Tech was in the same V12 Navy program and it helped them win the 1943 and 1944 SEC Championship

The Wasp of Emory & Henry came to Knoxville to open the ‘24 season. Using the “Illinois shift and huddle system,” the Vols ran all over the Wasp. The game was still close until Billy Bone picked off a pass and ran 90 yrds for a TD.
UT’s season wasn’t very successful, but it started off well with the 27-0 victory.

Attend the local high school games, make excuses of schedule conflicts to the local alumni chapter, get that Fall landscaping done, watch chick flicks with the spouse. If it will help you to refrain from incessant spewing of vitriol on these threads, more power to you. GBO isn't just one season. If this one is twisting your innards, wait til next year may improve your quality of life.

5 overtimes, 135 yards and 2TDs by Jabari Davis, and 266 yrds from Casey Clausen were not enough vs Arkansas. It took 6 OTs and a 25 yrd TD pass to Jason Witten to finally finish off the Hogs in a 41-38 victory. Clausen finished with 291 yrds and 2 TDs. Forgotten, was Troy Fleming’s (Fellow Battle Gound Academy Alum) fumble recovery in the end zone in the 5th OT.

On September 30th 1989 #12 Tennessee beat #4 Auburn 21-14 on a rainy day in Neyland Stadium on the strong running of Reggie Cobb and Chuck Webb

How about Hobby in this game! He looked like he was playing center in basketball with all those rejections.
That rain standing on the turf in Neyland! WOW! Thanks for posting this.
