To Protect and to Serve...

I would honestly say a good 60-70% of people in prison today are there because of the drug war.
Until we treat drug addiction as the medical condition it truly is, we will continue to be the country with the highest incarceration rate in the world.

United States incarceration rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If there is no victim, there is no crime.

The statistic in the Wiki link provides Federal incarceration rates, iirc. Those people are not in prison for being addicts, they may be, but those statistics are for dealers. The threshhold for crack cocaine to be prosecuted back in the 90's was 50 grams. That was just to be eligible for prosecution federally, most cases are much much larger. For example, I have worked in Districts where 80 kilos of cocaine was not prosecuted federally and I've worked in Districts where 50 grams of crack was a huge case.

It's simply not news because LEO's do good/great things so frequently. Personally, I wouldnt want any of my good deeds publicized because publicity is not what I seek. Im sure many feel the same way, but when administrators catch wind of these good deeds they seize an opportunity to conduct dog and pony shows.

Stop referring to your job in terms of good or bad deeds. You get paid by taxpayers to serve and protect. When you do those two things, it is a job well done. When you don't, it is news worthy because that is a slap in the face to the people that pay you. I don't get a cookie every time I design something and a power plant doesn't collapse because of it. The first time I screw up, or worse, intentionally sabotage a plant, I will be fired and my face will be blasted all over the news because of it. Now go shoot some dangerous puppies.

What you're getting out of tims post and what I am are two completely different things.

The vast majority of cops are great guys and girls. It's no surprise only the scumbag cops are reported which makes cops overall look worse.

His overall message seems to be, "stop harping on all the idiots in our line of work. There are plenty of good ones." I have no problem acknowledging that there are good cops. But don't be shocked when the people that pay the bills only focus on the bad ones. Again, my bosses will never give me a press conference because my buildings don't fall down. When the opposite happens, I'm toast. That's life.

I don't believe he's saying that. In fact he said he doesn't care if he gets acknowledged and prefers to not be trotted around.

Yea there are some ****ty cops out there and they deserve to lose their job but it seems there are several here who have an extremely negative view of LE as a whole and that's not fair either.

My negative view of LE isn't so much the bad cops, although that certainly doesn't help. I just don't like the fact that you don't have to be particularly well educated to wield the power they do. And for the most part, they are above the petty stuff they give tickets/citations out to everybody else for on a daily basis.

Outside of the major crimes stuff, it seems to have become nothing more than an arm of the state to protect tax income and generate revenue through BS tickets.

Adding in dog shootings, no knock warrants, tasering, etc just makes it worse.

Get over it. You're not heroes. We don't owe you appreciation. We pay your freaking salary (not by our own choosing btw). In return for being your source of making a living, we are treated as subservients that should grovel and beg penance. We walk on eggshells and try our best not to raise suspicion in your presence because we know that at any moment you could find several ways to legally ruin our lives.

Case by case basis I know and there are a lot of conditional factors to take into account, but you and I both know there are people that have overly aggressive dogs. Case in point:

I have two Great Danes that are the sweetest things you'll ever meet.

Unless you kick the door in screaming and cursing. Then you will more than likely get bitten.

You should be more careful when terming "overly aggressive". The dog is confused and defending its home and the people it loves. The other is barging into someone else's home, screaming, threatening and cursing.

Have you ever thought of doing a couple of ride alongs to see what goes on these days?

True or not? You know everything, so set me straight.

Do you even know what the standards are to get into LEO work?

Set me straight instead since you want to climb on your high horse and act like you're intellectually superior to anyone that wears a badge.

Good thing I'm not a cop.

LE is like life. Some are well educated some are not. Some of the worst cops occupy both levels. Education is not an indicator of how good a person is. You realize that a large portion of our military is not highly educated, right.

I also don't feel like I have to walk on eggshells. I live life pretty carefree and respectful to LE and never have issues.
After being the defendant in a case where he tried to deny citizens such right, lost the case, and was forced by a judge to allow such rights...

Yes. Awesome guy.

I guess that's catchy around here. When I questioned no-knock raid practices and said that he signed up for it, and innocent kids/pets didn't, he read that I want cops to get shot.
