I mean if we’re talking sociopaths that will kill people and then plant a gun on them, then yeah... way less than 1%.

But I also think that at least 15% (really a conservative guess) probably have no business yielding the power that we’ve given to the average LEO in this country. Either because they’re crooked, incredibly incompetent, a douche that simply doesn’t know how to treat people, or various other reasons.

Also... What the guy who pulls over somebody that’s hammered but cuts the guy loose when he finds out he’s a cop? Is he a bad cop? Or the guy who writes tickets all day but then gets junior out of his so he doesn’t take a hit on his insurance? Is he a bad cop?

I would give those guys a pass... if they did that to total strangers, as well.

If you are going to include the douchebags, then I would lean more towards my number of 1/3 over your 15%.

Every single profession out there is the same.... we take care of our family and people we know.... cops are no different.

I’m sure some will say I’m being ridiculous but think about it. Basically what they’re saying is there’s a different set of rules for them and their families than for the rest of us.

And really how far can we trust somebody who has that mentality? What else are they look the other way for?

See I have the mentality that if I can’t trust you to do the right thing regarding the small stuff, then I almost certainly can’t trust you when it comes to something big.

So they're only as honorable and as trustworthy as their paychecks will allow?

And they knew what the pay was when they signed up.

It’s been my experience that the higher paid the job the more reliable the people working it.... you have a different experience?

Well I got out of one bc I knew someone at city hall..... I feel so ashamed.... there is not a single person on this board that wouldn’t do the same thing.

That is especially untrue in the public sector. If that were the case, then the US would have a balanced budget every year...

You are correct. You missed the point entirely with regards to the actions of the cop, but you are right when you say this with regards to civilians.

So here’s my question... How come when someone of authority saw that video a warrant wasn’t issued and he wasn’t arrested?

Cause if over 99% of that department is good cops, why didn’t one of them arrest the bad one?

Or is assault with a deadly weapon another one of the many professional courtesies they conveniently provide to each other?

I would be fine with cops being paid more if we ever get to the point where they're actually held to a higher standard.

As it stands currently, police are able to do whatever they please - and even be recorded doing it - and they get away with it.

Several years ago I was a huge body cam fan and thought all cops should have them all the time. Now I tend to think it’s simply a waste of money. They do whatever the hell they want and even when it’s on video there rarely seems to be consequences.

Or you have situations like the scumbag POS that executed Daniel Shaver. He got acquitted and the jury wasn’t even allowed to see the damn video.

We are on a cycle downwards.
A “few” bad cops make the rest look bad. And the ones that do “bad” things really, really, exc... look bad. So you’ve got a job that already doesn’t make enough money and public support turning to from positive to negative towards the police. It becomes a position that quality individuals are less likely to consider. As the position becomes harder to fill the departments standards becomes compromised to keep officers on the street. And it gets a little worse with each passing day.

I think the answer is to increase pay significantly and at the same time dramatically increase the standards. The question then becomes where do we get the money for that?

Newly released video shows a dramatic police takedown, and raises new questions about whether one officer acted courageously or went too far in his attempt to protect the public.

Officer Nick Guzley now faces discipline for how he subdued a man armed with an ice ax. A complaint was filed about his failure to de-escalate the situation. However, other officers have said he made the best of a bad situation, and no one ended up getting hurt.

The suspect made his way into a narrow corridor just past the old Seattle Times building. It was there that police tried to press in, warning the man he would be “Tased” if he kept ignoring their orders. In response, the man can be seen on the video turning to face the officers while holding the ice ax over his head.

Moments later, once the man turned back around, Officer Guzley rushed up from behind and made the tackle.

Officer Guzley remains on patrol but is awaiting potential discipline. One of Guzley’s own supervisors filed the complaint against him with Seattle’s Office of Police Accountability.

One of my biggest complaints is that it seems cops make no attempt to de-escalate things too much of the time. Far too often cops take completely non violent situations and turn them violent.

With that said, this doesn’t seem to be one of those times.
