To Protect and to Serve II

You and I both know (though you won't admit it) some people take it way too far in trying to provoke a response from whatever LEO pulls them over.

Now, go ahead and justify those being an a-hole to a cop just to try to get them to overreact.

I have no problem admitting that. That isn't breaking news. Not all civilians are angels, nor are all cops the devil.

Does this even need to be stated?

Again, what you don't want to come to grips with is that too damn many cops (not all, not most) are the type that we complain about.

Because I don't try to point out the incorrigible actions of the less than 1% each and every chance I get. I do realize the thousands of interactions each and every day tend to be polite, decent affairs that causes neither side harm.

Yet, you focus on just the negative. When's the last time you actually saw a positive cop story that made you think "not bad at all, guys"?

A lot more than 1%... a hell of a lot more. Again, not all. Not most. But too damn many.

Anytime the cops take "criminals" off the street (I'm making a distinction between "lawbreakers" and "criminals"), then I have no issue with that. Criminals are those that violate the life, liberty and property of another citizen. But a lawbreaker could be anyone from The Son of Sam to a guy walking down the street with a mask on to a guy selling loose cigarettes.

Would it be better if the citizens just rolled over for the cops and forfeit what ever rights they have left?

I don’t think it’s unreasonable for the police ever ask for your ID whether they suspect a crime or not. Your ass for an ID when you try to get through security getting on the airplane I don’t think that’s much of an inconvenience

You're asked for ID to get on a plane because they want to make sure you are the one that paid for one of the limited number of seats on the plane.

Sadly, I think he actually believes that.

I can't say less than 1% for ANY profession out here. At least 1/3 of any group is a drag on society. Judges, priests, doctors, cops, teachers... whatever profession.

You want to make a distinction between a mistake and a bad cop or are cops not entitled to a bad day/mistake?

Id go with GV’s %. 1% sounds about right in LE and the population

Well, that is typically how the govt and LEOs handle people, because that same thing could be asked of govt.

Fortunately, the airlines at least have to pretend to treat us right to keep our business.

Isn’t it true though that you get the law-enforcement that your city tolerates or local government?

I mean if we’re talking sociopaths that will kill people and then plant a gun on them, then yeah... way less than 1%.

But I also think that at least 15% (really a conservative guess) probably have no business yielding the power that we’ve given to the average LEO in this country. Either because they’re crooked, incredibly incompetent, a douche that simply doesn’t know how to treat people, or various other reasons.

Also... What the guy who pulls over somebody that’s hammered but cuts the guy loose when he finds out he’s a cop? Is he a bad cop? Or the guy who writes tickets all day but then gets junior out of his so he doesn’t take a hit on his insurance? Is he a bad cop?

I would give those guys a pass... if they did that to total strangers, as well.

If you are going to include the douchebags, then I would lean more towards my number of 1/3 over your 15%.

Every single profession out there is the same.... we take care of our family and people we know.... cops are no different.

I’m sure some will say I’m being ridiculous but think about it. Basically what they’re saying is there’s a different set of rules for them and their families than for the rest of us.

And really how far can we trust somebody who has that mentality? What else are they look the other way for?
