A dog is a bad player....when used towards a human it has negative connotations.
A Dawg is a hard-nosed player or close friend. when used it carries positive connotations.

the fact that UGA fans co-opted the term does not change its meaning. They did not coin the term.
Interesting. So you think the term dawg as far as slang was coined before Georgia had dawgs as mascot?

the first use of the spelling Dawgs by Georgia was in 1977 How Bout Them Dawgs? The Crazy Connection Between Georgia Football and Cambridge, Md. - Secrets of the Eastern Shore.. trust me it was a term used as slang on the streets well before that, where the F do you think they got it lol? It is used almost interchangeably with the terms road dog (trusted friend guy that has your back) and junkyard dog (tough grimy mofo).

Most slang comes from the streets and the prison system. The words get popularized and co-opted and over time their meanings get changed.
