TN only 7th in SEC in Talent

We have more than one 5-star.

The following were 5-stars on either 247, Rivals, or Scout: Hurd, Malone, Phillips, McKenzie, Richmond, Kamara, Warrior, and Kongbo.

Also, Preston Williams was a 5-star before getting injured his senior year, and Shy Tuttle was a 5-star entering his senior year, but stopped doing recruiting crap after he committed to the Vols, and was downgraded (he still finished 53rd).

To say these guys aren't "elite" because they didn't finish in the Top 35 on a single recruiting site is foolish.

You're right, but somehow..... 247 killed all our 5 stars in last year's class except for McKenzie.

Most are trying to keep it real, the Vols have shot this year at a big season but that doesn't mean if they fall short of the high expectations that all will be lost.

Actually it will.

Butch won't be pulling in anymore back to back top 5 classes. Its either win big in 2016 or never again.

We can't waste this opportunity.

I disagree but only time will tell

How can you disagree?

Recruiting is already on thin ice. You think another year of lost opportunities will have recruiting clamoring to join us?

Some on here are acting like 10-2 while losing the SEC championship will be just fine.

WRONG.

Lose this chance when you have by far the most experienced team in the SEC along with 2 top 5 classes and you'll never recover with Butch Jones.

We must win big if we want to continue any momentum in returning this program back to it's part glory.

Well that may be true, but the 2014 class has seven 4*'s MIA, and 3 more 4* that have contributed little (Bates, Mosley, and Bryant). That class
delivered some superstars, but overall is a major bust.

There were plenty crying about last year's class too. Then Jones closed strong.

You're lack of knowledge of just about anything at all is amazing. Your level of ignorance is impressive.

LOL. You must not follow recruiting very often.

2014 has been a phenomenal class. Its produced 10 starters on team 120. And that's not even including Emmanuel Moseley (who began last year as a starter).

RB Hurd
WR Malone
TE Wolf
C Thomas
LG Robertson
DE Barnett
FS Kelly Jr.
SS Gaulden
KR Evan Berry
PK Aaron Medley

Almost every team in the country would kill to get 11 starters from a single recruiting class.

If you think #14 rated recruiting classes are gonna win SEC and national titles you're gonna be dissapointed for a long time coming.

You need consistent top 5 classes to compete with the Alabama's of the world. And another year of choking away leads won't get that done.

Its either win big or go home for Butch Jones in 2016.

Is recruiting season over yet? No. Let it play out my man. Do or die, wow you want to start over if we don't win a SECC? See how far we fall off the map with a new hire after a coach improved our record every year?

Except when you look at the top 5 recruiting classes from that last 10 years and realize those teams win ALOT of football games

Yes...that is a macro-analysis of recruiting rankings but that's not really what the op does. It defines "talent" very narrowly and tries to micro-analyze match-ups from it.

No. But it will be a sobbering pill knowing we'll never win anything of note with Butch Jones at the helm.

He might get us back to being a top 25 program but we won't get back to that perennial top 5 status of the 90s.

If he wins big this year (and by big I mean SEC/national title) then we'll be back to being one of the 5 premier programs in college football.

Premature at best and downright ridiculous at worst.

LOL Gaulden hasn't played a down, and there are 2 special teamers on your list. 12 are gone from that class, many that were 4* recruits. Now, I've
already allowed that we plucked superstars in 2014, but overall that class is a major bust. Sorry.

Butch has built a program identity. We just plug in big fast players now. Every year is a potential championship year moving fforward.

We have a very good opportunity this year. But in 2017 we could be special. Dobbs is holding our pass game back quite a bit. But hes doing everything else to put his team in position to win.

Dormady could be very good. HE WILL IMPROVE OUR OFFENSE.
Our defense in 2017 will again be a nightmare.

But we'll be pretty good this year.

You should go look at that class before you challenge my comment. Some of you people have short memories.

I am very familiar with that class. Dewayne Hendrix and Daniel Helm are likely the only two who have departed that would currently be in our 2 deep rotation. D4H has it right on this one...by the end of their 2nd season, the class has produced several starters including our best defensive player and leading rusher.

This isn't "chicken Little", its based on objective facts - i.e. the recruiting rankings.

Now maybe Jones coaches this team up to overachieve v. the other more talented rosters on the schedule (based on star ratings not based on past production).

'objective facts'? WTF? how about, objective opinions based on rosters, etc?

SMH.

1. Go look up Alabama's 2014 class and tell me whether you would want to trade classes with them? I sure as hell wouldn't. I look at their players from that class and the only ones who could start for us would be Cam Robinson and maybe Marlon Humphrey. Nobody else from that #1 rated class could make our starting 22. If our 2014 class is better than Alabama's, I don't know how you could say our class was a major bust.

2. If you're a vol fan you would know Gaulden is a beast. He hasn't played yet because of injuries but the coaches and his peers say he's an animal. There's a reason he's already got a starting spot locked up.

3. Evan Berry is the best kick returner in the country. If you don't think he's a valuable piece that deserves inclusion into the great players we landed from the 2014 class, then you are delusional.

I don't care if you don't like Dobbs but I hope you realize we're also losing Hurd, Kamara, Barnett, Sutton, and JRM after 2016. That's our 6 best players on the team that will definitely be gone. We might also lose 3rd year players like Ethan Wolf, Jashon Robertson, Coleman Thomas, Justin Martin, Jonathan Kongbo, Rashaan Gaulden, and Todd Kelly Jr. if they have big years.

You're delusional if you think we're going to be better next year. Especially with what currently looks like a mediocre recruiting class coming.

2017 is a rebuilding year buddy. Its no championship season and will definitely not be better than 2016.

Agree. This is the year it needs to come together. Tennessee will still be good enough to win the east next year based on what they have returning on the lines of scrimmage, but there may be some pieces missing next year, like the dominating running game since the fantastic trio will be gone.

And yes, Butch really needs to do anything he can to secure a top 10 class this year. That's the key to sustained success. This class will improve dramatically if we just do what we are supposed to do and win!

Not sure I would call it's major bust, but several players have not played up to their star ranking - Malone, Gaulden, etc.
