TN Commit David Oku

Bringing race up is asinine.

It's about race and not about race all at the same time. I never wanted to admit it, but Oku wasn't ever coming here if Drayton left because he felt more comfortable with him because he was black and understood certain things that white coaches don't. Feel free to try and dig something else up that could explain it.

I just don't think you throw that out there until you have more facts than all those coaches happen to be African-American. I think it's much more likely that Oku is being fed some BS about UT from Drayton and Troop.

Kid must be stupid if he believes anything coming from Troop and Drayton about UT. It's a whole new staff and culture, what could they possibly say?

Troop maybe, but Oku trusted Drayton and that's something that's hard to replace, plus Drayton is AA and that helps with the comfort level as well. He never wavered until Drayton was gone. I didn't even really feel this way until the whole Ole Miss thing came about. That made no sense until I looked who their RB's coach was. Oku may just be more comfortable with a AA coach as his position coach than a white one.

You said something about this the other night before you realized Ole Miss was even in consideration. Just saying.

I just cant see race being an issue. You are playing for a university not an assistant coach. You are playing for a team that will give you a credible degree and or get you to the NFL.

Here's the Top 3 reasons that recruits choose a school.

1. Parent/Guardian
2. Assistant Coach
3. Head Coach

Those three in that order. Why do they do this?? Relationships and comfort level.

I think there is a lot more to it than this. I believe that getting a degree is far down the list for the vast majority of these guys. They ALL think they will make the pros. I do believe their position coach is a big factor in things.

Position coach is a BIG factor. Moreso than the Head Coach because you rarely have any interaction with the Head Coach after you get on campus.

can you imagine the outrage if a white kid said he picked a school because he wasnt comfortable with the AA position coaches at the other schools he was considering?

I think we should pull a miami on him and give him a date to sign by. He had us believing he was coming here with out question until two weeks before NSD. He was all excited about Kiffin and the new staff. I remember him saying he wished NSD would just get here so he could sign with us. I think more coaches will start giving time lines now in response to these pre madonnas that want attention. I understand this is a big decision for them but thats why they have visits to use. Most of these guys get offered at the beginning of their senior year or in a lot of cases their junior year. Hes had plenty of time to sleep on this over the past month with the coaching change and all.

I agree with giving a deadline. That should become a standard to stop the string alongs that's quickly becoming more popular by the year. Especially at UT where we have spring ball to implement ANOTHER new system on O, they do not need to be wasting ANY time on trying to court these last belles of the ball. I love UM's coach for setting a precedent here. As for pre madonna, would that be Debbie Gibson or Tiffany?

the NCAA will have to impose a deadline as some point, because it's going to be a status thing about who prolongs it the most

Oku is not the problem IMO, it's the signing period. I do think schools will start to implement their own signing period though (ie Miami). Coaches want to focus all their time and energy on spring ball/current players, not official visits.

I hope they do. I'm all for giving a kid plenty of time, but it seems that by NSD the decision should be made. All this waiting is a waste of time for the coaches who should be thinking about spring practice and the next years recruiting class.

The drama surrounding the nation's No. 1 all-purpose back, David Oku from Midwest City (Okla.) Carl Albert, is equally compelling. Oku, a one-time Tennessee commitment, apparently is upset that the Vols brought in Brown for a visit; thus, rumors have surfaced that Auburn has jumped into the lead followed by Syracuse, with Clemson and Ole Miss being mentioned as well.

Oku is a wuss if this is true. Again, if this is true, I wouldn't want him on the football team that I support.
