TN Commit David Oku

Well, obviously we have had a horrible 4 year stretch. Horrible...the worst in school history. And yes, the elite football programs don't have stretches like that. I NEVER said SU was elite...just a historically good program going through it's worst stretch ever. My main point was that a bad 4 year stretch doesn't suddenly make you Duke.

Even in the best years, Syracuse never recruited Oklahoma. We'd get the best NJ kids, and some from PA, Conn, NY, and we had a little Florida pipeline going for awhile in the 90's. So being involved with a top Oklahoma prospect and UT verbal while being at a lowpoint is undoubtedly a good thing for us, and hopefully a sign that we are bouncing back.

Sounds like you finally have a new coaching staff to get excited about...just like UT does and that is a good thing for both programs. It also sounds like getting a top prospect like Oku to visit has your fans excited....nothing wrong with that. I really hope we get Oku but if he decides against UT I would rather see him at Syracuse than another SEC school.

I got tired of reading through all the crap in this thread so I will just skip to the end and ask. Is there any new news on Oku?

I think we can both agree that Syracuse in not on the level of a Duke. You guys aren't particularly relevant now but you are still a Top 25 all-time program. I also agree that with the current staff you guys can get back on top of the Big East and will be able to recruit better.
To be fair, nobody still thinks UT is on the top of the mountain.

Syracuse is the only city really in "Central NY". Buffalo, Rochester, and Albany are not "Central NY".

Again, Syracuse and it's surrounding suburbs have close to 1 million people.

So, out of curiosity and an effort to return this thread to the topic of Oku, do you feel there is currently enough talent at SU for him to be featured effectively? I ask because it would be one thing for him to sign under the pretense that he will play early and often, but it's not going to be too much fun if he is targeted as the main weapon on the team without much help around him.

Dwood, do you know how I feel about Oku visiting SU? It just like a male student visiting a women's college, which has never had a male student before. The male student possibly showed some interests to attend that women's college, but we don't know for sure.

One one hand, folks from the women's college was surprised by the male student's visit: the just amazed about the possibility that a guy would move in to the same dorm with hundreds of girls; WTVH-TV CBS 5 - Sports - Video - Orange Eyeing Super Recruit David Oku

on the other hand, the people from the men's college where that male student promised to attend couldn't believed it: "How could he not hang out with men and think about going to live with a bunch of pussies?" That's basically what you see on this UT board.

And you, DWood, came all the way from upper NY, and try to tell the forks here that "We are not pussies; we got a few men come to own college 20 some years ago, technically we are coed, and we are manly enough to have a guy on our campus." All these have been reflected in your generous 30 posts here.

However, DWood's indoctrination drove the guys nuts, and here comes the namecalling, etc

OK, somebody please continue my story , I got to go to my class right now...

So? Is snow bad? You act like Tennessee is some prime vacation spot or some place where everyone desires to live.

Is snow bad.... nope when its there for a day or two...

When is snow bad?? Hmmm When it starts snowing Labor Day weekend and doesnt stop until Memorial day, yes snow is bad. When you have so much of it that they have to make a 50 foot mountain of snow in the walmart parking lot, its bad.

Trust me... there is a reason why everyone is leaving Upstate NY for the south and its not taxes

Well, Mike Williams is returning to school, who IS a legit gamebreaking talent at WR and could play for anyone in the country. He was out of school last year, but had a very good soph. season in 2007. His return will be a big boost to an offense in need of it.

The OL was average last year, which was an enormous improvement from previous years. They should be adequate next year.

RB is actually a position where SU has recruited well even in the bad years. Delone Carter was Ohio's player of the year a few years back and had a promising freshman year before blowing out his hip. He missed 07 and most of 08, but hopefully will be back and healthy next year. Averin Collier was a 4 star recruit who redshirted last year. Antwon Bailey was a freshman who came on late last year and had a huge game in the win against ND. Doug Hogue was also either a decent recruit and decent power back. There is talent at this spot, but a gamebreaker like Oku would add another dimension.

QB...we've got the starter from 07 and the starter from 08 back, so there's experience, though neither is very good. Just brought in a recruit, and there are a few other recruits from the last few years. I would expect an open competition with the new staff.

So overall...QB a huge question mark and has been a weak spot for years.

OL was previously horrible, but much improved last year and should be OK.

WR - one legit star quality player, and some other decent talent. Should be a decent unit.

RB - based on overall talent, should be the best unit on offense.

Labor Day to memorial Day is a huge exaggeration, and there's no need for it. We know we are tops in snow, so the exaggeration does not strengthen your point.

As for people leaving...LOL! Snow has been here forever, why did they wait until the NY economy got bad to leave? If it was the snow driving people off, people would've left long before. The truth is, when you're from here nobody bats an eye at the snow. It's only people who aren't used to it who go nuts about it.

...and when someones says he is being disrespectful or trolling, he insists "No I'm not, I just want to talk about recruiting." But when someone says his shoes are purple, he replies, "that's not even purple, its fuscia. I like it when you try to tell me about the clothes I am wearing when you have no idea. I never call it purple, and neither does anyone else around here. Just shows you don't know what you are talking about."

Seriously, central ny, south east central ny, upstate north west central ny, who cares? You want southern hospitality, but you wanna pick apart everything that's said.

If your gonna be here, why not give us some oku quotes, or some info on his visit, or tell us what you've been hearing from good sources.

Kinda like 98 deg. without rain for a month.

You mean people like recruits?

The snow here in the south is much more dangerous to drive on then it is in the northern climates. My wife loves the snow, I'm indifferent.

I hate to bust your chops but that really doesn't make much sense. I'm in Memphis and it just snowed a little bit this morning and you should see all the idiots. It's more dangerous to drive on in the south only because of the people driving on it.

I can't even begin to tell you how many people from upstate NY I've met who live in the south. They all have the same tendency to brag about how great NY is and how bad the South sucks until you ask them why they moved from NY to down South and why they don't go back. They shut up pretty quickly. TN is not big with NY transplants but NC, SC, South GA and FL are huge. Even southern Alabama has a fair share of transplants.

Oku is not going anywhere. These Syracuse fans sound a lot like the Nebraska fans from a few months ago who swore up and down that Oku was going to be a Husker.

I was in real estate and the majority of my clients were people trying to get away from "hurricane alley" (Fla., Alabama and Miss. gulf areas), and move here to beautiful east Tn.
...had quite a few from the North trying to get away from all the snow too. :p

Does everyone else think Oku is taking the visit to Auburn to take advantage of the free trip like others are doing? Can't really blame him. I am hoping that is all it is and he is a Vol on NSD.
