TN Commit David Oku

But Oku was in Syracuse last weekend. How could that be Why would such a top recruit who mighty Tenn. wants, even look at that yankee school? It's unlikely, but imagine the meltdown if he DOES change his mind and go to SU?

I'm not sure it would be such a "meltdown", as you put it, if Oku chose to attend Syracuse. Not like we, or any other college program hasn't lost out on a sought after recruit. In the end it would be his decision anyway, not something based upon our arguments on a message board regardless of whether both sides have presented good points or not (which I think we both have). The main thing that I feel continues to get lost in this discussion, due to the passion that we as UT fans have, is that Syracuse was not on Oku's radar until Drayton joined the staff there. Read into it what you will based on the fact that he is visiting, but I think it's a little late in the game for SU to be a serious factor in Oku's decision.

There wouldn't be a meltdown, you moron. That's what everybody's trying to tell you. If any recruit we wanted went to SU we'd say 'man that sucks, good luck to him' and be on our way. We aren't basing our future on this one kid, which it seems like you guys are...even though all Oku did was take a visit. But hey, good luck with that.

Ooh, more namecalling. That wonderful southern hospitality kicking again, eh?(i guess we're so close to Canada, so I should throw that in)

We aren't basing our future on him. Just being involved with him...this came out of nowhere and was very unexpected...if we get him it would obviously be a big boost though. I think a star UT verbal commit changing his mind and going to struggling Syracuse would cause a bit of a message board meltdown, but if you don't agree I'll take your word for it. I hope we get the chance to find out who is right. You never know.

That is certainly not lost on the radar of SU fans. We know that's why we are suddenly involved with Oku. And we look at the fact that our new coaching staff has recruiting connections and experience at big time schools as a huge step in the right direction. A player like Oku from somewhere like Oklahoma wouldn't have looked twice at SU in the past 5 years. Things are changing for the better, for us whether we get Oku or not.

Talking about Syracuse football in a thread where everyone else is doing the same, is trolling? Grow up.

i forgot defining southern hospitality had anything to do with football. thanks for playing. take it back to the Hofstra boards.

Prove it.

Your only stong bowl opponent in the SEC that you didn't lose to was in the Sugar Bowl against Auburn in the 87/88 season and you tied. Your overall record is 3w,3l and 1 tie. Your 3 wins came against a weak LSU program in the HOF Bowl, a weak UGA program in the '89 Peach Bowl and.............Kentucky in the '99 Music City bowl. Wow, you should be impressed at beating those great teams! Please, your bowl victory argument is laughable and I can't believe I wasted the time to out you on that line of bs.

Southern hospitality doesn't include being nice to someone when he's disrespected you, so in your case, don't count on any type of 'hospitality' around here. We don't like Yankees down here because 99% of them have no respect for the people around them. IE: you.

You said that SU was one of the top BE teams in all of those years, while beating weak SEC teams...which is at least partly false. The Big East football league didn't even exist in 88 and 89. And SU was a very disappointing 6-5 in 1999 and had what was considered a bad year at the time, but still beat Kentucky in an "up" year for them.

Explain to me how LSU and Georgia were weak though. I honestly don't remember.

And when you say an overall record of 3-3-1, what are you referring to? Where is that coming from? 3-3-1 in what?

This is the disconnect with DWood and his ilk. Almost every opposing fan of most schools that visit our board, or come to a game at Neyland, are impressed with the treatment they received. But come around pushing buttons and we push back, then there's a lack of southern hospitality. Ignore should be the word of the day.

Who did I disrespect, and where?

LOL at "we don't like Yankees down here". Nice open-minded people, eh?

I cut off the food supply a while ago. :)

150,000 people in a city is pretty sparsely populated for NY. You guys are the 5th largest city in CENTRAL NY state.

The surrounding suburbs and the city itself has around one million people. What is "Central NY State"?

I love the effort to school me on the area I live in, but that is not a term that's used around here and I have no idea what you're talking about. Do you mean in NY State? Upstate?

No you didn't. You show up every 15 minutes to chime in about how you're "ignoring me", while still reading everything I say and chiming in replies about me. Nice attempt to stay "above it all", while in actuality being one of the few who is actually dragging the discussion down rather than contributing. You're fooling nobody.

You fully admit all of this while still arguing Cuse's stature in college football. Top level teams don't have to hope and pray that they might be graced with a 4 star commitment. If you aren't anywhere on any of the top player's radar then how do you argue about your programs prestige as it is relative to today?

I'm only referring to the few who have gotten angry and calling names, while talking about "rude yankees" and "southern hospitality".

Most have been pretty good in this thread, I must say. A few have not.

I don't see where I've been rude or trolling at all though. Just because you may not agree with me, doesn't mean I'm a troll.

UGA and LSU were weak in the late 80's and early 90's. Especially LSU and that is why you played the teams in the Peach and HOF bowl. I don't know what to say if you're proud of beating an "up" KY team in the Music City Bowl. Your bowl record against the SEC is 3-3-1. I'm failing to see your point about how you were getting tired of beating the SEC in bowl games, especially when you were getting weaker SEC competition.

Well, obviously we have had a horrible 4 year stretch. Horrible...the worst in school history. And yes, the elite football programs don't have stretches like that. I NEVER said SU was elite...just a historically good program going through it's worst stretch ever. My main point was that a bad 4 year stretch doesn't suddenly make you Duke.

Even in the best years, Syracuse never recruited Oklahoma. We'd get the best NJ kids, and some from PA, Conn, NY, and we had a little Florida pipeline going for awhile in the 90's. So being involved with a top Oklahoma prospect and UT verbal while being at a lowpoint is undoubtedly a good thing for us, and hopefully a sign that we are bouncing back.

I've been in your area plenty. Do you really not know what central NY means? I worked with every closely with every utility company in NY and am very familiar with the region and it's population centers. Your area is very, very sparsely populated for that region of the country.

My point was in response to those saying SU could never compete in the SEC. The only bowl loss to an SEC team in that era was to Florida in the 1999 Orange Bowl. Fact is, SU usually won their bowl games in the era, so you acting like they were only good in the "weak" big East and couldn't compete with other leagues doesn't really hold up.

Fact is, SU did quite well in bowls when they were making them.

87 - tied with Auburn(Sugar Bowl)
88 - beat LSU
89 - beat georgia
90 - beat Arizona
91 - beat Ohio State
92 - beat Colorado (Fiesta Bowl)
95 - beat Clemson
96 - beat houston
97 - lost to kansas State (Fiesta Bowl)
98 - lost to Florida (Orange Bowl)
99 - beat Kentucky
01 - beat Kansas State

Syracuse is the only city really in "Central NY". Buffalo, Rochester, and Albany are not "Central NY".

Again, Syracuse and it's surrounding suburbs have close to 1 million people.
