They got Shrout last year and they are bringing in Mauer in this upcoming class. What gives? Both guys are 3 stars and neither of them look very impressive when you look at their numbers. Is this staff just banking on not needing a new qb for a few years? Does Pruitt just know a diamond in the rough when he sees one? Or, do they not have the ability to recruit a better qb?

Funny people always seem to blame all recruiting woes on a particular position on the coaches.

Let me ask you this and answer objectively if you can...which I doubt.

You are a top rated QB, why would you come to UT so you can get hammered behind a crappy oline like JG did? Because our offense is so cutting edge you'll throw until you are drops off?

There is a reason Treveor Lawrence, Justin Fields, et all did not come here. This is not a great place for any QB who has pro aspirations to attend.

I think what gets frustrating is when I look and see that Alabama has both the #5 and #8 Pro-Style QB prospects committed in the same class. Moreso, I don't waste my time looking at how many stars a guy has. I look to see who else is offering a guy. Right now when I look at Maurer, I see that the other offers he holds are from Boston College, Cincinnati, Appalachian State, and Charlotte. I hope the guy comes in and lights the scoreboard on fire, but until we are getting a QB recruit that was desired by some big boy schools, I don't think my excitement level will get too high.

It looks like they may be trying to sway a guy out of Houston named Grant Gunnell by getting a trio of D-1 prospects from there. That guy is considered a 3 star only two spots above Maurer, but more telling is that to get him he would have to decommit from Arizona, and spurn his other offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Texas A&M, and Arizona State. Seems more legit to me.

drew breeze was a three star. 1/3 the starting qb's were 3 star are less examples: Dak Prescott, Josh Allen, josh McCown, and Carson Wentz. how they play in High School is not a good barometer of future success as a qb. Development is the key. Look at J.G. for example, he has all the tools but is slow in developing. Hopefully he will develop next year.

If CJP turns out to have:
- a great eye for potential,
- a great way to develop athletes,
-or a system which doesnt rely on talent to win games,
then stars or other schools offering do not matter. If CJP doesnt have those, then the QB ranking and offer lists are concerning. Hard to know what's what because CJP is a new HC and we simply don't know his methodology.

The truth is Mauer showed at the elite 11 that he is a top QB. The fact is he’s committed to UT and hasn’t even glanced at others showing interest. I don’t think the recruiting pundits like this.

He played for a very mediocre HS team and still put up impressive numbers.
Lastly, QB ratings seems to be one of the most skewed. The NFL is full of 3 star QBs and there are tons of 5 star busts.

Everyone will feel much better after D4H tells us that Mauer will be the top heisTman candidate in 2 years.

D4H will be here after he finishes his 3 round NFL mock draft.

I was going to say the same, but you beat me to it.

At this point it doesn't really matter. If he wins with the guys he recruits then he has an eye for talent, can coach them up, or both. If we don't succeed with the players he recruits he'll get fired. Whether they're 3 stars or 5 stars. It's too early to know so far.

Maurer may have the goods. I hope so because I don’t think Pruitt is high on Shrout.

Look at some of Bama's former QBs. Coker, McElroy etc
You can win with a serviceable QB

If you look at the way JP wants the ball thrown, the kid from Georgia whose dad played pro ball is the best in view.
