This staff's qb recruiting

Maurer stats as a senior say at least four star. His performance in the QB 11 says he is one of the top QB's in the class. Have to wonder why his performance on the field and at camps have not changed his ranking.

They got Shrout last year and they are bringing in Mauer in this upcoming class. What gives? Both guys are 3 stars and neither of them look very impressive when you look at their numbers. Is this staff just banking on not needing a new qb for a few years? Does Pruitt just know a diamond in the rough when he sees one? Or, do they not have the ability to recruit a better qb?

I think what gets frustrating is when I look and see that Alabama has both the #5 and #8 Pro-Style QB prospects committed in the same class. Moreso, I don't waste my time looking at how many stars a guy has. I look to see who else is offering a guy. Right now when I look at Maurer, I see that the other offers he holds are from Boston College, Cincinnati, Appalachian State, and Charlotte. I hope the guy comes in and lights the scoreboard on fire, but until we are getting a QB recruit that was desired by some big boy schools, I don't think my excitement level will get too high.

It looks like they may be trying to sway a guy out of Houston named Grant Gunnell by getting a trio of D-1 prospects from there. That guy is considered a 3 star only two spots above Maurer, but more telling is that to get him he would have to decommit from Arizona, and spurn his other offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Texas A&M, and Arizona State. Seems more legit to me.
Maurer has offers from tOSU, WVU, TA&M, NC St.

Guess you overlooked those.

Funny people always seem to blame all recruiting woes on a particular position on the coaches.

Let me ask you this and answer objectively if you can...which I doubt.

You are a top rated QB, why would you come to UT so you can get hammered behind a crappy oline like JG did? Because our offense is so cutting edge you'll throw until you are drops off?

There is a reason Treveor Lawrence, Justin Fields, et all did not come here. This is not a great place for any QB who has pro aspirations to attend.

Maybe because it will be at least 2 seasons before a QB in the '19 class starts and they believe UT's staff can improve the OL in that time.

Well it's no secret. If you find the right QB it can drastically change your team for the better. No one including me knew how important Dobbs was to that particular team until he was gone. If you can find more than a game manager then you're in business, otherwise you have to build around the game manager and you can still get there. Just takes more time.

Mauer was expected to commit to tOSU until right before he committed to UT.

Out of curiosity where are you getting this information? And what 3 guys are you referring to out of Houston? I know Jalen Curry is out of Houston, but his recruitment is not tied to Gunnell. If anything, his recruitment was more closely tied to Wanya Morris (GA) and Kris Bogle (FL), since they were all big buddies and had mentioned they would like to play together, though Curry and Bogle appear to be longshots now. And there has been no activity in Gunnell's recruiting thread for over 6 months, which means none of the recruiting guys at VQ, Rivals, 247, ESPN, etc., have discussed Gunnell in relation to UT in quite some time.

Remember the QB we wanted went to Nebraska, so we took a flier on Shrout but he's probably just a career backup.

Lots of folks wanted Ryan Leaf taken in the draft ahead of Peyton Manning because he had more upside. You say potato with a long A I say it with a short A. Rating stars are your basic crap shoot when offering high school kids a scholly or even selecting a QB out of college for the NFL draft. After all former Miami Heisman winner Gino Toretta set the NFL on fire at the QB position, right?

Maurer threw for 3572 yds / 34 TDs / 12 INTs I’d say that’s pretty good. He also had 466 rushing yds.
