Absolutely! A loose gas cap will too. Sadly, a lot of mechanics out there auto-assume the owner left the cap loose, and/or start replacing the parts in the engine bay trying to correct the issue. After the semi-expensive trial and error parts replacement period, then they consult the schematics.Sometimes the wrong gas cap will trigger a code
Go to a pull a part if you have one near you.I have been chasing EVAP codes on ny truck for almost a year. I have replaced everything on the system. Still showing an EVAP leak. Replaced the gas cap. Twice. So today I pulled rhe bed and started digging into it again. I think I found the problem. The gas cap. Is. The. Wrong. One. It does not match the filler neck and it twists on and clicks, but if you grab it you can just pop it right off. I started looking more carefully and both of the caps I bought are the wrong one. The parts store said they were correct and when I looked up the part number it shows as being for my truck.
So now the search begins for the correct part.
Lesson here: Do NOT throw away the old part without first comparing it to the new one.
All the rubber lines are new when I replaced the EVAP canister. Gonna go grab a cap for an 03 f150 rather than for an 04 f150 heritage. No idea why the dadgum database for the parts store cannot get that correct. Live and learn. On the bright side, the $60 ATV winch from Harbor Freight that I mounted to the ceiling of my garage made pulling the truck bed off a snap.Crawl under your truck and inspect the rubber line(s) for the EVAP system that go to the tank for dry rot.
My 02 Durango threw the code up for 3 or 4 years. I too replaced the gas cap and went all over the engine looking for the trouble. I finally found that dry rotted hose going to the tank. Replaced it and never had an issue again.
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one roughly rapping, rapping at my carport rafter boards—
"'Tis some damn woodpecker," I muttered, "tapping at my carport rafter boards—
Only this and nothing more."
But it's E V E R Y D A M D A Y, this little bugger
"If I catch him, I will kill the fugger!"
