The Weightlifters Thread

No, but really. The first week my chest and triceps were sore to the point that I couldn't reach up to adjust the collar of my shirt on day 5 lol. I know what you're talking about.

I've found that going hard like that early on and being sore that long is not beneficial because I can't work out for a while afterwards. Plus I just hate the feeling

Anytime I've had a long layoff I start off going a little light.

Trust me, I learned my lesson. You always want to go as hard as you can, but a disciplined approach would have been more beneficial. My 5RM went down from week one to week two, and on week three it barely climbed back up to my starting weight. In the few weeks following, it climbed significantly. The last couple weeks, I've been following the advice of a few on here and have been doing negatives after I reach positive failure, and that has wrecked my muscles and now I'm seeing very significant gains.

If I ever have another year long layoff, I will start back doing full body light workouts, probably.

Yeah, I try to take it easy, meaning fewer sets, not lower intensity. Especially on legs.

A little stretching goes a long way. Fifteen minutes daily, and ten minutes before you lift. Legs day is also the one day I'll do a little warm up on the treadmill.

That's a lot of stretching. I believe you should simply warm up before you lift & stretch after. Just my thing. 15 minutes a day seems like a lot I might could do 5.

Same. I usually stick with cables or dumbbells, and keep parallel with my body. The range of motion varies though.

aside from doing tri pull-downs, the iso-lateral shoulder press was the only other machine I use and so I was hoping to find a shoulder press exercise using free-weights

I hate to agree with CC :), but I've always heard to stretch after a workout as well. At least in recent years. It used to be popular opinion that you stretch before a workout.

I try to stretch daily, but not 15 minutes. I try to avoid static stretching for the targeted muscle of the day. Yates says static stretching destroys the muscle fibers thus inhibiting your gains from training.

What are your thoughts? What kind of stretching do you do?

And honestly, stretching is very underrated. If the inactive simply stretched daily, it would make a huge difference.

On chest day I will hold dumbells in a fly position for a couple minutes. It's usually pretty heavy & close to if not my last set. Sometimes I'll just hang on the pull up bar. The rest are just the basics.

P90X stretches! Static and ballistic.

Broke my PR for deadlift twice today. Hit 425 and then 430. Did 135x10, 225x10, 315x5, 405x1, 425x1, and 430x1. Did three sets of wide grip Pull ups before too. Everything went better than expected.

Those numbers aren't the greatest, especially for me weighing 215. I'm improving tho, so im satisfied for now.
