The Weightlifters Thread

Yessssss. Did negatives on bench today starting at slightly above max weight and going til I couldn't really even support the bar anymore, then dropping weight.

I. Am. Feeling. It.

Not that big on negatives. I'll do them after I'm pretty fatigued or basically burnt out. Not the base of any workout by far & not for every lift. I'd rather be able to push a 300lb object off of me rather than slowly let it crush me.

Well, if the object weighs 301 lbs, you'd be able to hold it up long enough for your girlfriend to escape.

Supposedly it will increase the weight you can lift, as well, though. I'll report back as to the success.

Alternatively, I'll lift until I can't lift any more, and then just keep lifting as the spotter gives more and more assistance on each lift, until he's basically doing all the work, then drop the weight down. Maybe this is the same effect, or maybe it's just another way to push yourself beyond your limit.

The idea behind negatives is that some believe it's the best way to improve overall strength, not just strength doing negatives.

I feel the negative part of the rep is the most important part of the rep for building muscle. Slow and controlled is what I do. Powerlifters will disagree which I have no problem with. But I can also push a 300 lb object off my chest.

That's the point. The idea is that slowly controlling the weight with the targeted muscles will improve the strength of those specific muscles better than a positive will. The reason power-lifters don't care much for negatives is that they are not interested in isolating muscle groups, necessarily. They just want to lift it however they can.

Yep, powerlifters just want to get the weight up. There are a good amount of them that are fat and out of shape. That is not what I am looking for but I guess that is what is great about all of us talking about lifting weights, we all have our own styles and it makes this board very informative.

You're always getting a negative if you're lifting properly going slower just robs you of reps. How is the negative the most important part of the rep? It takes a lot more strength & exertion to push weight than it does to hold it & lower it.

What does a person's weight have to do with anything? If you're not lifting to get stronger & build muscle why do it?

Whether its you or a power lifter if you're doing bench press you're working the same muscle group. A negative isn't working more than pushing the actual weight. To each their own. I see a lot of folks doing silly stuff at the gym.

Is this a serious question?

1) to lose weight
2) to be more attractive (tone)
3) to meet ladies at the gym

I for one have no amount of pride in the weight I can lift.

Cardio to lose weight & tone. If you're getting tone lifting your building muscle & probably getting a lot stronger in the beginning. Are you that guy that doesn't wanna get "too big"? Please. You can meet ladies anywhere.

This thread just got more awesome. You don't see any value to negatives govols/cc?

As opposed to actually lifting the weight? No. It's absurd to think otherwise. Unless your just dropping weight you're always getting a negative. If I'm on a last set or something doing a heavy weight for reps I may try a couple assisted lifts then get a couple good negatives but that's about it.

That goes back to one of your other posts about losing weight & building muscle, virtually impossible.

Like building muscle by doing negatives?

I guess since you're lowering the weight instead of lifting it, you're actually probably losing muscle, huh?

You're not gonna build more muscle or get stronger doing a negative as opposed to actually lifting the weight. Second part is just dumb.
