The SNL Thread.......

Saw the new one on Hulu earlier today...

- Love or hate Seth Macfarlane, he did pretty well. His Ryan Lochte on Weekend Update was pretty funny.

- The show sorely misses Kristen Wiig already. She has really been the only recent cast member who is funny almost every time she was on the screen. I don't see anybody right now who can fill that void.

- I think the one thing the show has always been able to do well is presidential impersonations, but Fred Armisen as Obama was just terrible. He handed it off to Jay Pharoah who still could work on it a bit but is light years better; the smugness is uncanny.

- Best skit of the night was about a puppeteering class with Bill Hader as a disturbed, grizzled veteran of Grenada, whose puppet was also a disturbed, grizzled veteran of Grenada. Hader's not cut out for everything, but there are some bits where he can be side-splitting. This was one.

- Promising sign on the writing: None of the skits seemed to drag on too long, which over the last few years has been far and away the biggest problem with the show. One bit at the end had Macfarlane playing an Amish guy trying to figure out how to advertise a website. It got a few laughs and clocked in at under sixty seconds.

I like Armisen, I think he's funny and very versatile, but I agree, his Obama was awful. He never sounded like him at all and barely got his mannerisms down.

I liked the Gangnam Style skit

IMO this was one of the the better beginning to end episodes in a while. Nothing outrageously funny, but nothing that was completely worthless either. As for Kristen Wiig, I'll disagree with you a bit. She had her moments, but SO MANY of her characters were just flat out annoying. You're right about the puppet skit though, it contained the high point of the episode. "Hi, my name's Clark and I like biscuits and waffles." LOL

Wiig is funny but I felt too many of her characters weren't different enough, i.e. it seemed like she was just playing variations of the same character.

Yeah, I miss Andy Samberg more than Wiig. I hated most of her recurring characters. Also, never thought I'd say it, but I miss Jason Sudeikis as well.

There are some promising younger members, and every time a group of cast members leave the show, everyone says the same thing. "SNL is done. Everyone good is gone." Then, eventually, we find 3 or 4 of the newer members that we love, and then they will leave and we'll say the same things all over again. I loved the skit Will Forte and Sudeikis did with the sports announcers being sponsored by all the feminine products.

So far, I really like Jay Pharoah. His impressions are all good, and SNL always needs a couple good impressionists. Bobby Moynihan is pretty good usually. Kenan is funny, but I hate some of his skits. The new chick, Cecily Strong, is pretty damn cute. Hopefully she's funny.

Did you watch all of the season premier? Sudeikis is still a member of the cast.

Wiig had one character in different outfits. It go old a long time ago. It was time for her to go.

Bump for Christoph Waltz hosting tonight, he was fantastic in Inglorious Basterds and Django. I wanna see how funny he can be

The Bieber episode was surprisingly alright

Bill Hader at the firehouse lunch skit made me lose it. WHAT?! NOT THE B!!!

Kevin Hart hosting next week, should be funny

I think it's not till the week after next. IIRC next Saturday is a rerun.

The Jamie Foxx episode has been the best one this year IMO, with the Swarovski Crystals sketch being the hardest I've laughed so far. This whole season has been really up and down. There have been some really funny shows as well as a few where I don't think I hardly laughed at all.

You're right about Kevin Hart, next week is Martin Short i think?

I saw on Hulu that they have the Foxx one, i wanna watch it when i have time. Last night wasnt any good, but i didnt expect it to be really.

It's stupid but "The Californians" skit is one of my favorite skits they do now. Mainly because Hader loses it almost every time he plays Devon.

Hader loses it any time he tries ANY skit. Dude's horrible. Especially Stefan, or however you spell it, on Weekend Update. Every. Single. Time.

Did anyone else see "Darrell's House?" The show about Zach Galafianakis, a local Knoxville man, having people over to his house for the first time? The skit was pretty mediocre, but pretty cool to see Knoxville on SNL.

There's no video of the skit on Youtube

Did you see the second skit about this? Totally made the first skit worth it. I thought it was the funniest of the night.
