The Runner's thread

4 miles on Monday 29:58. I can tell that this training is starting to catch up with me. My legs are staying sore. I feel like I can't settle into a run like I was at the beginning of the training. I am gonna tough it out cause I want to do this half marathon. I think I am gonna do the one in Lynchburg that ends at the Jack Daniel's dis.

Do you use a recovery drink?

I'm not sure if you have tried this or if it would help at all, but I recently started using a foam roller before and after runs and it seems to be helping with leg soreness. It hurts a lot using post-run, but the lingering soreness seems to be diminishing. My pace is slower than yours, however. I can run a 5K around 7:45 pace, but typically run between 8 and 8.5 for anything over 5 miles.

I started running last October and never dreamed about doing a half marathon, but working up to that myself.

When I started I never thought I would be doing a half marathon either, but trust me if I can do it... you can too. Good luck.

As far as the foam roller, not sure I am familar with that. Any links or web sites to look at for this?

Thanks! Good luck to you as well. The foam roller was suggested by folks at the Fit2Run store I use. This is a link to the product website (hope this is allowed): Foam Rollers are Great for Stretching, Promoting Flexibility and Myofascial Release

Now that I think about it... I really wouldn't classify as sore... maybe more fatigue. Anybody got anything for that??? Hahaha.

Tried the rolling pin last night... worked pretty well after my run. I still feel like my legs are fatigued pretty bad. Got a night off tonight and then 11 miles Saturday. Hopefully the night off will help some

I had a personal best 10 mile run yesterday...felt it in both legs pretty bad, but used the roller and was feeling much better a couple hours later and today is pretty good. Thinking about a short run this afternoon, but don't want to get overly fatigued-we'll see.

I hope the night off helps, and I would suggest using the rolling pin on your off day too. Seems to be good for me.

Congrats on the run! I will try to use it tonight but I have some plans tonight that might hinder using the rolling pin.

14 total miles this week plus .6 miles of Iron Mikes all at once (civilians call them lunges). Those Iron Mikes basically did me in

I'm short enough I can do uphill lunges on my treadmill, incline at 12%. Feels awesome!! I don't go fast though, I focus more on form.

Still can't run but I'm at least walking to try to maintain some shred of fitness... May try riding the bike for a short distance to see if that's going to be doable. The ankle doesn't really hurt except first thing in the morning and if I have been sitting a while. As long as I stay active it seems to be ok enough. It hasn't stopped me from working but as shorthanded as we are at the office I couldn't lay out of work even if I wanted to. Worked with a pretty bad cold all week in addition to the ankle...

Got 11 miles today after work... supposed to be upper 20's to low 30's here about the time I will be running.... hope that doesn't hinder me too much!!

15 miles. Total - 133.5

Lessons learned today during my 14 mile point to point run.

When dropped off at a trailhead 20 miles from civilization, you had better well be committed to completing the run. When youve finished and its 30 degrees, the sun is setting, the wind is blowing 20 mph and your wife is late picking you up then you'd better have a little left in the tank to run a mile back into town so you dont get hypothermia.

Thanks. The views were spectacular for almost the entire run. Made the wind & cold more bearable.

So I've never really ran in my life but tried to get started in the last week or so.. I'm not a big guy at all, in fact I'm about like a pole and I'm in decent overall shape.. Anyways, I ran a mile and got a cramp (it felt like a cramp anyways) when I finished in a weird spot. It's right next to my shin bone, on the outside but I just assumed it was because it was my first time running in a really long time. So day 2, day 3, and day 4 came and each day I had the same thing in the exact same spot.. except day 3 I had a little squishy bubble thing pop up on my leg and day 4 I had 2 bubbles show up. Hurts like hell and lasts about an hour. Any ideas? Cut my leg off? Get it looked at? Suck it up? I haven't ran in several days because of it.. just wondering if you all had heard of anything like that.
