The Runner's thread

AARrrrrrGGGHhhh!!! On today's run i moved over to let some cyclists pass and rolled my ankle badly enough to end my run. It still hurts like all getout and is swollen hours later. High ankle sprain I believe. MRI tomorrow to confirm. Half Marathon seriously in doubt now.....

Hate to hear this. Hope you get some good news

What are yall using to carry your water or whatever with you when you run? I can't seem to find anything that is semi-comfy or that isn't a fortune to buy. I looked at a couple of different options and they were just not remotely comfy or expensive. Looked at a camel back which was comfy but expensive. Any ideas??

Thanks! I just don't feel like thats super fast. Maybe its just me. My goal is to be able to run my half marathon in less than two hours..I think thats pretty do-able.

You should hit that easy. My training runs are 9-10 min/miles. Last year ran a trail half in 2:01 with a tight achilles the last mile.

For 5-10 mile runs I use a 10 oz handheld bottle from Ultimate Directions. 10-15 miles a 20 oz bottle from Nathan's. Both are comfortable and fit in a way that you hardly notice them. They usually cost $10-20.

Yeah your running trail half marathons... thats a little more hard core than road running. I think anyways. I would probably have 9-10 min miles running a trail. Maybe even longer

The one you are using for 10-15 mile runs does it go around your waste? I really don't want anything that I just hold in my hand.

I've been running for a few years now. I ran my first Peachtree Road Race last year and did 1:03:something. My goal this year is to get under one hour. I run in a pair of New Balance 442's which are the retro tennys. Pretty sure they aren't made for running but I find them perfect for my feet. The pair I have now have been with me for over two years. I don't want to give them up even though they have holes and are on the verge of no longer resembling shoes. But they have been with me through everything.

I enjoy running on the roads near my house or anywhere outdoors. I loathe treadmills. The farthest I have run is during the PRR which is a little over 6 miles.

Good news/bad news.... It's just a bad sprain and shouldn't require anything more than rest and ice... Bad news, no half marathon for me...at least not the one I signed up (and paid for...) to run in two weeks...

Well that sucks about the half marathon but good to hear about just being a sprain. Good luck and wish a quick, speedy and full recovery

Don't be a b**** :) I've had a partially torn ACL since 2009.

This is what I use. Your palm and fingers wrap around the bottle. Your thumb slides over top of the mesh. The back of your hand supports the weight of the bottle. It is a clever design. It feels a bit weird the first time but after a few minutes it is comfortable.

Call or email them and see if they will let you transfer your entry fee to next year.

Good idea! Will do. I would imagine they would but even if they don't it's all good. I'm already looking out for another half later in the spring or early summer. You don't realize how much you miss running until you can't do it! Living in Peachtree City is a plus because they are constantly having 5/10/15k runs along with sprint tri's (which I haven't yet done).

4 miles on Monday 29:58. I can tell that this training is starting to catch up with me. My legs are staying sore. I feel like I can't settle into a run like I was at the beginning of the training. I am gonna tough it out cause I want to do this half marathon. I think I am gonna do the one in Lynchburg that ends at the Jack Daniel's dis.

I'm not sure if you have tried this or if it would help at all, but I recently started using a foam roller before and after runs and it seems to be helping with leg soreness. It hurts a lot using post-run, but the lingering soreness seems to be diminishing. My pace is slower than yours, however. I can run a 5K around 7:45 pace, but typically run between 8 and 8.5 for anything over 5 miles.

I started running last October and never dreamed about doing a half marathon, but working up to that myself.
