I have always landed on the balls of my feet and I feel like it was putting more stress on my legs than heel striking
Sounds like you might have an issue with overstriding. keep your strike under your hips. When you first start doing it, it will feel slow almost like your jogging. After you get comfortable, increase your cadence to go faster.
Biggest reason why I like my five fingers - they keep you from over striding.
