The Runner's thread

Ran .75 miles and then walkd/ran the .75 miles back right after finishing a 24.7 mile bike ride. As I stated in the cycling thread, I felt like I had thunder thighs.

I guess I better start practicing biking then running after hearing you guys talk about it. I plan on knocking out one of two tri's in September.

Figured I would just do the bike ride and not train too much for it.

Assuming the seaman thing will make you a natural swimmer is crazy talk - up your alley, but still crazy talk.

Bad idea to avoid specific training.

Need to learn how to run after biking. Your hamstrings will be tight and your legs heavy. It will take a bit to find your pace and rhythm.

The only bike I have is a bomber, It should be great for training but it wears you down after about 5 miles. So if I plan on doing a tri I need to go buy a road bike, and I cant seem to pull the trigger on it.

Not looking to win it. Sprint Tri that's only a 13 mile bike ride.

Still a different animal and uses different muscles. It's amazing the ancillary muscles that get worn and aren't there to help you run. Absolutely true of swimming then running.

You will be happy that you did during the race. I would say that the hardest part of the tri is the first mile run after the bike leg. It takes a few min to get your legs under you.

I've had no problems swimming and then running. But that's what seamen are good at!

I rode a mountain bike my first sprint tri. Then I upgraded to a hybrid. It's a Diamondback Insight 1. I paid 360.00 for it. It has a hybrid road tire with minimal tread on it and has the straight bars instead to the road bars. It gets the job done for me. Might be something to look into.

It seems it would, I was doing the reverse last summer, running then biking, when I started getting interested in knocking out Tri's I had pretty much stopped doing it all together.

I was looking at something like that but I cant seem to find one in the bike stores around here, I have been looking at a Trek 1.1 for about $600.

Most of the race rides will be under 25 miles so I don't think I need an Orbea or anything like that. There is one ride 'The Air Force Cycling Classic' that I would like to try and its a criterium.

I noticed you are in OBX. Kitty Hawk Cycle Company will rent you a nice road bike for $105/week. Michael the owner is a great guy. I rented a bike from him last year while on vacation there. Since your local to the area he might let you rent one for a couple of days just for the race. It would be worth going to talk to him.

That's a great idea. I didn't buy a bottom end road bike because I wasn't sure if I wanted the slick tires on the trail I ride. I would have loved to be able to rent one for a few days to see if I liked it.

Ran 4 miles this morning. Running in Hiwassee much easier with the temp but the alt change is a challenge.

rode mountain bikes for years and thought I wanted a road bike but wasnt sure id want to deal with traffic. Renting one for a week is what convinced me to buy one.

You got lucky with the weather. Last week it was 95° with outrageous humidity. This week has been perfect.
