The Runner's thread

On week 7 of my training. Just finished 3 mi today. Feeling great and loving running

I really think this has to be one of the best times of year to run. Not too hot and everything is blooming... as long as the pollen count stays low. Which here in Chattanooga it hasn't.

BTW the guys from work sucked it up and we all went running yesterday after work. Second time around and those guys are picking up on it quick.

I wasn't feeling up for running at all today. I was tired, and my left hamstring was pretty sore. I sucked it up though. Chugged some water about an hour before, along with a banana, and took a couple ibuprofen for my leg. I got out and got 3.1 easy. That was the best run I've had since I started, I'm really glad I got out.

Some of my best times and best runs have been when I was tired or didn't feel like running. Stick with it and you will notice a big difference when you do that! Or atleast I did anyways :good!:

Anyone have any opinions of some the best running shoes out there? I need to buy a new pair soon..

My favorite is the Asics GT series. Not too heavy buy just enough support for me.

It honestly depends on your stride and how much cushioning you need. If you don't need any go with some minimalist shoes like Yankee suggested for example.

I still love the Asics GT series. I had like 12 pairs in a row of them before I decided to try the new Under Armour running shoe (the MicroG), which I also like.

I'm late joining in on this thread, but I wanted to jump in since I'm ramping up to tackle a long time goal. I have to take a fit-test for my agency, and part of it is the mile and a half run. My best time is 9:08, but that was almost 9 years ago. My time last year was 9:34. My goal is to get under 9:00.

I was planning on integrating some sprint training into my routine, but wanted to hear some suggestions on how to approach this. The rest of my fit-test incorporates push-ups, sit-ups, and flexibility, so I have to maintain those as well. I currently do a hybrid workout of P90X, P90X2, and Insanity:Asylum along with at least 2 days of running a week. I'm training a total of 6 days a week right now.

TIA

Throw in some interval training 1 or 2 times a week. Start with some 4-6X400 and work your way up. If your not sure what pace to train at here is a website that I always use to figure out what pace to train at. Remember to put a previous best time in the input field NOT the desired time. For instance you say last year you did a 9:34, put in ~6:20 for a mile and use those paces.

Awesome, thank you.

Went to the track this morning. Figured out I don't know how to pace myself without my treadmill. But I can walk and keep my heartrate up at the 95% range.

I have ran every day for the last couple of weeks. The problem is my knees are getting really sore/hurting. I had to take the last 2 days off. Sucks.

Do you guys run every day and combine that with lifting? How many days a week do you run? I would like to run for about 45 minutes every day, the knee pain is starting to worry me. I had runners knee in the past and had to stop running for about 9 months.

My knees are really sore when I try to lift weight like squats or leg presses.

If you went from zero running to running everyday for 45 minutes, then you're probably going to do some damage. Your body needs to acclimate to a change like that, you can't just jump right in it like you want. Start out running 3 or 4 days a week. When you can do that without feeling sore, move up to 5 days a week, then 6, etc. Nine months off running means you'll need to strengthen your legs up again to get that much running in.

Anyone a member of athlinks.com? It's pretty cool. I've been able to claim the results of all the races I've done. And I've added the races I'm currently signed up for.

I only run 4 days per week and do core workouts 2 days and rest 1 day.

Ran the half-marathon in Knoxville this morning. Great weather and great race.

Was my second one (ran the Knoxville half-marathon last year as well) and surprisingly did better despite much less training. Maybe I'm on to something there.

Done for the long distance running for a little while, start spring ball on Monday.

been in WLC for the past three weeks and the only PT I've done in that time was two 4 mile runs. Just ran the Raleigh Rocks Half Marathon at 1:50:37. Not too shabby, but not too great either.

The one that finishes in Neyland? My sister and brother-in-law ran that too. They're Auburn fans. But they ran in support of Aicardi Syndrome. A friend's little boy has it. So I guess it's okay for them to be in the stadium.

Yeah, I ran the same exact race. It was a nice race.

And yes, I suppose Auburn fans can be allowed in Neyland when it is for such a good cause.

Did 4 miles today at 8.5 min mile pace. Longest I've ever run at one time in my life, lol

I also ran about 4 today. Felt like crap at the beginning of the run, but felt strong by the end. I haven't been feeling well lately, so it was good to get out and get a run in.

That's great. Sub two hours is always great IMO. Just completing qualifies as good

7 miles yesterday...great run. We live on a big hill, and the climb home was brutal. I think I'm going to scrap lifting legs since I'm running hills...too much soreness and I'm sure that they are getting worked hard enough on the climbs. Halfway home to a half!

I love the fact that all of yall are running half marathons and stuff. This pumps me up and makes me want to fun another one really really soon!

I have read in several different web sites that you shouldn't run more than three days in a row. Personally I never run more than two days in a row. When I first started back running I had some knee pain as well so I started icing my knees and shins for twenty mins before my run and twenty mins after my run. Really seemed to help me and after about a three or four days of doing that I had no more knee pain. Hope this helps
