It does not excuse the many bungles by our coaching staff, but on the next to last play of the game after we got a 1st down the ref signaled that the player got out of bounds.

The clock should have stopped. We subbed while the clock was running, which led to confusion and our illegal substitution.

Still, Butch should have called timeout once the clock started running and avoided the penalty.

Also, not going for the 2pt conversion is inexcusable.

Shut up, we lost this game, not the refs plain and simple. It was gift wrapped, and we gave it back.

This is the real clincher for me that he clearly can't think on his feet in a dynamic situation. As soon as he saw the clock was at 10 seconds he should have just calmly counted it down to 5 seconds and called timeout. Instead he panicked and rushed Dobbs to the line to spike the ball (and thus, theoretically take his last timeout home with him).

The refs and timekeeper hosed on on the entire last drive. The clock was constantly running a few seconds after the whistle blew and the last play was a cluster by the refs. I thought Wolf was clearly out of bounds.

And before any of you chime in NO THIS IS NOT WHY WE LOST!!!

Doesn't mean I have to like it though

Plenty of people to point blame at. Another embarrassing and now becoming typical with the Vols. Butch will lose this team if he doesn't get a big win soon.

Yep - there was zero strategy to that. No possible positives, only negatives.

I counted about 20 seconds that ran off the clock that should not have on the last drive, but that's all hometown clock operation. If not for the last penalty, the 50 yard FG should have made it. It just comes down to coaching, these guys need to be prepared to line up.

He rushed Dobbs to the line to spike to keep the last time out in his pocket in case we had a false start or some other type of penalty on the kick and needed the timeout to avoid the run off.

Refs did not help but Butch and his so called staff screwed us. No matter how much he changes you can't change stupid. As Forest said " Stupid is stupid does". When you lose two big games when your up 2 TD's in 4th it falls down to very poor coaching.

He stopped the clock because it was a first down not because yhe player went out of bounds. He made a judgment call that the players progress was stopped in bounds. When the ball was spotted the clock started again. Correct action by the ref. Nice try though.

Agree but we also got 2 very favorable calls in the first half.

That's exactly what happened, and Butch was right there asking as soon as it happened. Butch should be called timeout as soon as that kid came off the bench and was clueless.

Bottom line: with a 13 point lead deep in the 4th quarter against your hated rival on the road, you go for the jugular. You don't go into a fetal position and hope to hold on. Butch needs to grow a pair.
