The QB Debate.... Post Bama (merged)

Helton was in the process of adjusting to Alabama and they were letting off the gas. Chryst was a beneficiary of that. He had a great quarter. Then he came back down.
Genius, check my post two above this one for what happened. If you call that "coming back down" then you must be another loyal member of the JG fanclub. Congratulations.

Sure. Doesn't take a genius to realize what happened in the second half.

After the cluster of kickoff return to open the second half Tennessee touched the ball THREE. I repeat THREE times. One of those was early in the third that was a good FIFTY yard drive and ended in a missed field goal. Then Tennessee touched the ball TWO, I repeat TWO more times the REST of the game. Know how many times Tennessee/Chryst threw the ball on those in the last 20 minutes of the game after the missed field goal?? ONCE! Know what else that means? After the missed FG attempt Tennessee was in "lets get the hell out of here" mode. I'll try to stop now to allow all of that to be processed by the JG fanclub members.

Now, did you like the "excuse"? Facts sometimes get in the Guarantano fan boy bias, absurdity, or whatever it should be called.
In all reality Pruitt knew it was a lost cause for a comeback after halftime; getting that safety then Bama scoring again like 2 mins later. The whole coaching staff went ultra conservative in the 2nd half. I would have loved to seen at least 2 more TD on the board but it is what it is. We got decimated from the very get go. I watched every second of that game and after that blitzkrieg Bama rained down early in the first quarter I knew we wouldn’t win but wouldn’t get shutout. Personally Chryst should have started from the onset and maybe the score isn’t 58-21. Maybe it’s more like 44-28 or something...the guys kept playing well and didn’t cash out like last year. I see promise in the future of this team and hope they play their hearts out these last 5 games!! 7 wins isn’t out of the question. The mentality of the team has to be “we want a bowl game this year” and if they think that it will happen!! Keep fighting boys and Go Vols!!!

What baffles me is that Helton let's JG drop back and run plays that take several seconds to develop and in the process gets him blasted every time he tries to throw a pass. JG finally gets injured and Helton brings Chrystal in and calls quick hitters and screens which allow him to stay clean and upright and then most on here wanna crown Chryst the better QB. I call bull!! How about giving JG some of those quick throws to keep him from getting him blasted every time he tries to throw the ball. Prime example, the quick throw to JJ which resulted in one of our td's. 2 step drop and get it out to the receiver the play is designed for? And please don't give me that old, stainless argument that JG holds the ball too long! You have to hold the ball for a couple of seconds at least to have a chance to complete a deep ball or even a crossing route where the receivers have to go across the field. Chryst couldn't start for a mediocre pac-12 team and Pruitt knew it. He is an insurance policy and nothing more

Unbelievable. What are you people watching?! It's called being a quarterback and knowing what your options are pre snap based on defensive alignment and going with that as soon as possible after getting the ball. Guarantano appears to have little clue as to how to do it effectively. JG is THROWER. Chryst is what some people call a quarterback...

I’m sure we know JG status now. However CJP probably won’t divulge it until gametime Sat so they have to prepare for two qbs. Unless it’s a broken collarbone and he’s obviously out for the season.

KC has made contributions to the team as a reliable backup. JG could learn stuff from him, if he wanted to.

My concern is that everyone be treated fairly, including the fans.

Here are the reasons coming to UT was a good move:
  • Todd Helton is a decent QB coach.
  • Demonstrated team player rather than cancer.
  • Played well enough against Alabama to get a look from a few pro teams. Maybe better than any QB in his draft class.
If he does not play another snap, yesterday should be good enough to get him drafted. Better than Peterman. Runs an offense better than Bray.

UT did not do him wrong. Saturday against Alabama was enough to get him noticed. The back shoulder training before the Auburn game filled some skill gaps. Might have a 6 year pro career in part because of UT finishing school. He'll be OK.

You and KB can't stand it. WTF was Pruitt going to do? Put JJ in because you don't like KC?

I have nothing against him. I have repeatedly said he played a great quarter and did his job well.

Is that not accurate?

Saban and Pruitt both confirmed that they were starting to make adjustments when JG got hurt and KC took advantage of them before Bama adjusted.

The second half he was 4/8 for 45 yards. His first seven passes he did really well distributing the ball on some quick passes.

LOL, I'm sure they watched film on KC and expected to see him play.. They knew they would most likely knock JG out on 3rd and long perched in the pocket for a deep throw. We've seen that all year
Not the first time we've seen a backup QB come in and catch Bama off guard. Dobbs did in 2014 and never had a good game against Bama again.

The hit didn’t look like a broken collarbone , the usual collarbone break occurs when the shoulder gets fallen on awkwardly. This looks more like a bruised chest / ribs / soft tissue insjury. Very painful and sore but a few days off he be ok

Hey genius, if he is such a great "quarterback" why is he a career 54% passer who can't win the starting job?

Make all the excuses about the second half you want. He came back down to reality.

He had MORE ATTEMPTS the second half than in the first half everyone is hyped up over. He was just not as good when the defense adjusted.

He came in down 28 when Pruit and Saban both acknowledge the UT o started trying new things. JG had just hit a big pass. KC continued on the momentum and capitalized on the coaching adjustments.

I hope he is ok, but he should not be given another snap until he develops pocket presence

He saw the play and stood in there knowing the big hit was coming and threw the ball and then got blasted after he fully let it go. Complete 40 plus yard throw and then got blown up. I was right there on the 30 and saw the hit after he delivered it. Knee he was hurt and my thoughts what a tough SOB to do what he did instead of tucking it and falling down. He knew what he had to do the execute the play and has bruised ribs because of it and you say that crap. You sir are the soft wuss who shouldn’t play football not JG. Some of you make me sick with your Chuck Norris persona but are little you know what’s in real life blasting on a kid who made a great play while sacrificing his body for the entertainment of the likes of you.

Give it up KB. JG is the better athlete but not the better QB over KC. JG takes way too many big hits bc he can’t see the field and can’t make fast decisions to get the ball out of his hands. Etc. Even vs Auburn he took way too many hits. IMO time for a QB change. But I won’t hold my breath

Best case scenerio, is J G is hurt but not injured. Let it take 5 weeks t heal, meanwhile, have Keller start
This way we win. Also Keller gets to play and J G can sit and be next years starter
If J G continues to play, it is not a big deal, because the games we lost can not be blamed on QB play
We will be fine with either QB but I prefer given the unknown QB a chance

Funny, JG hangs in there and gets killed by unblocked rushers. Chryst never seems to get hit by anybody, especially not unblocked rushers! Hmmm. There never seems to be any unblocked rushers when he's under center...Thinks that make you go HMMM!

If that was true, then every OL should be released from his scholly.

Except he rarely gets over 2 seconds to throw. On the fumble, bama sent 5 against 5 blockers. LG thought it best to block nobody. There's no way that a qb can overcome that.
Recognizing defense and getting into proper protections are tasks of the QB. Chryst does that much better, which is why he had more time to throw. And the RBs had more room to run.

And let’s stop acting like Bama had quit and KC only played “garbage time.” He came in the the 2nd quarter just before UT’s first TD...which he threw. Chryst just played better.

We chose KC as a graduate transfer because he did not insist on a contract, signed by the university, that he start. Apparently other graduate transfer quarterbacks did.

Chryst might see things better and call the blocking protections out as well as gets rid of the ball quicker. That will keep you from getting killed when you can see and have an idea where the blitz is coming from. I don’t think JG sees it. Just my 2 cents

I was at the game so I didn't have the advantage of seeing the extra in-game offerings that come with watching the game on TV.

But let's be honest, yes JG gets hit a lot and gets back up. But he needs to beef up. He seems to overacting and be dramatic when he gets hit...or he is soft...

Seems to me Pruitt was trying to send a message to JG to keep him on his toes. If he isn't going to perform or show value to his team, he may get benched. If he gets knocked out and has to go to the sideline, he may get outplayed and be benched...either man up and/or get your line to play better. We can't go out and play defeated. Pruitt has said constantly that we are trying to build a culture.

Dumb azz post of the year. Some of you are so stupid. I am out. Makes you sick to see the mentality of Bama fans wearing orange.

Waaaaa.. Please don't play your best player anymore. Pleas don't score any more points. Please be gentle.... Waaaaaaaa...

Good grief... smdh...

No, good coaching is with a 30 point lead and already having a knee problem it would make sense to take him out so he doesn’t get hurt. No one beats them with Tua but possible if he can’t go. Was dumb to have him out there and I hate Bama so when he got driven hard to the turf, would’ve been fine if they had to pay for what would’ve been all over the news of how stupid little nick was.

Not the song he was singing yesterday during the game thread. But he is all over the place.....blows where the prevailing winds want him to go.
