The QB Debate.... Post Bama (merged)

JG has the physical talent but, to me, it seems like he processes things a bit on the slow side. Also he doesn't have good situational awareness. Both of those things combined do not bode well at the QB position or, for that matter, any position at this level of play.

That said, as usual the backup QB is always the favorite especially when he comes in and plays well.

Yeah, I fractured my clavical twice. Only way to relieve the pain, other than meds, is to keep the arm elevated in a sling so there is no sag in the shoulder.
I broke mine as well, and he was bouncing way to much when he came back out in the sweat suit for it to be broken.

Very mature at qb position, a wasted talent on the bench. Could be competing for the east with him at the helm. I never understood why bring a proven guy here unless you plan to start him. He was able to get the ball off. I know players changed throughout game but from her on out really serves us he makes the field anymore. We need to look to next season, bottom line. Agree?
So typical of here. Extreme overreaction to about 2 quarters of football.
Yes he played good . Did he play better than JG did against Auburn? No.
Proven? He lost his starting job at Stanford.
The way I see it there is little difference between the two, one has a better arm, a little more accurate, the other reads the d an is more aware of what’s going on.
Even if he is a fraction better, you gotta go with the one that willl be your Qb next year and assume he will improve quite a bit from experience.

OP...is that a professional medical opinion? sure hope JG does get well and plays...not giving up on JG...we need him back in the game..and,

GO VOLS...BEAT GAMECOCKS!

That first drive was 100% on JG. It's false and frankly lazy to blame everything on the OL. The OL owes the QB and their teammates their best effort, but the QB owes their teammates the same. No reason on Earth JG shouldn't have seen that blitz coming, but he clearly had no clue.

Having a cannon arm is not enough. He's simply not a complete SEC QB right now. And we really haven't seen any indication that he's capable of growing in that area.

That said, Helton et al have some explanation to give for why they went back to that personal package after last week's success.
Ainge lays that blitz out pretty well here...

It was a corner blitz.... how’s that on the left guard?

Edit: Granted thank goodness they took Carvin out because he was getting JG killed on 5 v 5 looks.

because the end looped out to the tackle and the corner went thru the B-gap. the guard...carvin....did not get proper depth and it was too late once he noticed he didn't. go back to the uga game. kirby ran this same exact blitz, except with the olb and de. the de makes contact with the tackle while the olb...cb yesterday....loops in and the guard misses. that's NOT a JG issue. its an o-line issue. our oline and rbs stink on blitz pickup too much!

It’s hard to retain a job if you tear your ACL and the guy behind you keeps winning. It wasn’t anything he did wrong

That's one of the best posts I've seen. I had a downfield view at the UGA game watching that happen and you're dead on.

It's often fun to discuss the fellows' relative merits (Chryst--vision, experience, maturity ... Guarantano--tough as nails, laser arm, pinpoint accuracy, hella fast release) when they're "on"...or their weaknesses (Guarantano--limited situational awareness, can get flustered ... Chryst--inaccuracy) when they're having an off day. But let's don't trash either of them. They're both Vols quarterbacks, we should be supporting both for wearing orange and giving it their all.

Fact is, we don't know one-tenth as much as the coaches do about these two lads, their strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies. They'll play who they know gives us the best chance of winning. We should keep that in the back of our minds while we're having fun with our fan debates.

So you anti-JG guys.....PLEASE explain why the offense scored ZERO the entire 2nd half?

i cannot wait to read these excuses.......

KC did an admirable job, no doubt...glad he's our backup, but I'm still a JG man...sure hope he'll be ready for the next game...and,

GO VOLS...BEAT GAMECOCKS!

I love JG but it's obvious to me that Chryst is better at reading defenses.
Based on what? He did a good job of getting the ball out on time but about the only throw I saw where there was really a progression was the post he threw to Byrd for a TD.

there's a lot of people in here that dont understand football or hate JG due to factors he cannot control and have nothing to do with football
I guess it's natural to blame the teams' fortunes on the most visible player, but I don't get how you can watch and think QB is the problem. People did the same thing last year calling for Will McBride.

and even that was a simple underneath concept designed to lift the coverage so byrd could be open. the lb turns his shoulders, throw the slant.....which is what happened

I began the season convinced JG was the better option for all the reasons that have been frequently stated. Great heart, toughness, durability, strong arm and accuracy. But I cannot deny that he has a hard time reading defenses, changing out of bad situations on play calls, takes too long to release the ball, and lacks many of the attributes that Chryst has. No matter how you dice it, KC is calmer in the pocket, knows this OL gives him about 3 sec to make a read and adapts to it better, and recognizes defenses and just sees the field better. Even the run game looks smoother with him at QB. He just has better command of this offense from what I observe. Would anyone disagree with that?

If true, we are in a world of hurt. JG has ZERO respect from his teammates.
I don't believe that but the guy doesn't scramble at all to buy more time and some of our receivers could adjust there routes if he did. I don't think it's wise "standing tall in the pocket" and taking hits. I'd try to avoid the hits. I don't know what the deal was with Chryst yesterday but he looked good. Helton has never let him pass much in previous games so we never saw the total deal to render a verdict on his abilities.
I actually got excited yesterday. I'm not much of a drinker but this Jim Beam Devil's Cut is the best likker I've tasted in like forever. Anyway after the Byrd TD pass I thought UT was down 28-14 which was incorrect because it was actually 35-14. That took the wind outta my sails for sure. Thought the way Chryst was running the offense and UT's defense shutting down Bama for a couple of series UT was back in the game and it was gonna be a fight. Unrealistic expectations I suppose but just the never say die FAN in me. Go Vols, if we can win on the plains we can win in columbia much easier with either QB.
