The private vs. public education debate (split from QB thread)

For those of you who aren't from the Chattanooga area, Bj Coleman is the next QB at Tennessee. His soph year at McCallie he came into the season opener in the 3rd quarter(down by 3 td's) and dang near pulled off a miracle and was the starter after that. McCallie is usually disliked in the city by everyone who didn't go there but everyone loves Bj Coleman regardless. He is a natural born leader who got 100% from all of his teamates, he will make us proud.

.....Go BJ, but like it or not, you SOUND like a steryotypical, condescending McCallie grad. Lofty pride makes McCallie SEEM to themselves more hated than they actually are. It's a common psycosis inflicted by the seperatist, elitist staff. This is not relegated to the "Blue Tornado". All high-priced prep schools instill this "us against them" mentality in order to efficate their extreme tuition rates and "skull and bones" aura.

Wow, am I the only one that finds this separatist, elitist post funny? Your statements are internally inconsistent, in that you claim that "their" "us against them" mentality is self-created, but fortify it with your statements about "them" (as opposed to whatever group it is that consists of you and whoever else shares your bigoted sentiments that generalize about "all" of "them"?) There is apparently some kind of "us against them" mentality in play, since you admit that you "stereotype" "all" of "them" as condescending (and their staff as separatist and elitist); and it's made all the funnier that YOU do it in a condescending way.

You do all of this by way of the usage of such unneeded words as "efficate", and misspelled/misused words as "psycosis", which has a "h" and can't be "inflicted" in the way that you infer that McCallie does (in that with a psycHosis, delusions are symptoms of an underlying medical condition, and are most definitely not the defining point of the condition-- especially when the supposed delusions are nothing more than an incorrect assertion passed along by others).

So, I guess to summarize, you crucify McCallie for being separatist while separating them as, well, "them". You claim that they are not as hated as they think they are while making hateful accusations and pointless stereotypes and generalizations. You infer that they think that they are oh, so smarter than everyone else, while misspelling and misusing the language you use to do so.

Like it or not, you SOUND like the stereotypical, condescending <insert school here> grad that gets vaguely uncomfortable with anyone different than they are and has to lump anyone different into one large, generalized pile so that they can be easily dispatched.

Having attended a school very similar to McCallie (except better ) for a short time of my life, I can attest that it does create an elitist attitude in the students.

I just:

(a) Find such generalization and stereotyping disconcerting and beneath where we should be as a society. It's crass, hurtful and, well, just a lazy way to think.

(b) Find that particular post absolutely hilarious, in that they were arguments made in such a way that they disproved the author's intent.

I mean, they hated on an institution while trying to prove that they aren't as hated as they think. (How funny is that!?)

They separated all involved into different groups while calling "them" to task for being separatists.

They were condescending statements against the condescending attitudes of "those" people.

All this in generalization about "those" people who, as individuals, may or may not believe as the original poster attributed to them.

I wasn't disagreeing. I was just saying students at schools like McCallie or Kent Denver (Where I attended) seem to put themselves up on a pedestal/high horse above others. Took me quite a while to get over my little elitist attitude once I stopped going to school at Kent.

Only took a year of being mocked mercilessly about my elitism. But when you go to a school that costs more/year than some Universities then you tend to get a little big headed. It's not a good thing.

I graduated from one of those "elitist" schools in Tennessee. Founded over 120 yrs ago!

You are wrong buddy! Sorry. Some private schools are SOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than others its not funny. Not athletics, but in caliber of students, teachers, disipline, education, and honor. That is not elitist, it's FACT! Those that graduated (100%) have a better chance of going to college and graduating from that college than others. That is NOT an elitist statement, it is a fact. There are many wonderful public schools in Tennessee. Brentwood, Franklin, Germantown, Sullivan Central, ect....., but as a whole, Private is Much better than public. Better teachers and safer !!!

I am PROUD to have graduated from an "elitist" private high school. It made me a better person and will for my kids!

Not all private schools are better! There are some that suck. That is a different discussion.

You are wrong buddy! Sorry. Some private schools are SOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than others its not funny. Not athletics, but in caliber of students, teachers, disipline, education, and honor. That is not elitist, it's FACT! Those that graduated (100%) have a better chance of going to college and graduating from that college than others. That is NOT an elitist statement, it is a fact. There are many wonderful public schools in Tennessee. Brentwood, Franklin, Germantown, Sullivan Central, ect....., but as a whole, Private is Much better than public. Better teachers and safer !!!

I disagree that, as a whole, private schools are better than public schools, but that could be because I lived in East Tennessee and it is well known that the private schools aren't a significant upgrade to the school I went to. In fact, Farragut High School, which at the time I was there, was arguably the best high school public or private in all of East Tennessee. I will concede that our state has failed it's public schools in terms of funding though, which gives expensive private schools a distinct advantage because they can offer better benefits to teachers.

*edit* how do a thread about getting a new QB after Crompton become an issue about private schools? I honestly don't see how where he went to school will have anything to do with whether or not BJ is going to develop into a decent QB.

I get that, but it's not all of "us"! Most of those "elitist attitude" are "trouble" kids sent to boarding school. Many at Mc and Baylor were not borders. they wanted a better education and opportunities.

Know the facts before you speak! plus....you are too young to understand the history of those private schools. I'm not wanting a private/public debate. Some public schools are GREAT! But when someone (not you) terms these schools as "elitist", I take offense. That is why I said what I said.

DUDE, it was said that local Chattanoogans hate McCallie for who and what they are. I'm saying that THAT is exactly what they are taught. That is why there is a divide between the "boarders" and the "locals". BJ is a LOCAL. Don't EVER try to portray him as an "us vs. them". It's that simple.

.....good point on the privates. However, I chose to pay for my son's education now.
The reason it "got here" is because a USUALLY ACCEPTED falicy was written as fact and challenged. B.J. has NOTHING to overcome BECVAUSE( throw in some Latin BS ) he graduated from McCallie. B.J. ROX and he is NOT discriminated against because of where he went to school !!!!!

What traits, and which of my posts did you identify? I had not posted on the subject. And actually, (as mentioned in my post) the "US vs. THEM" mentality was more of a trait in your rant. It's one of the things that made it illogical, and your reliance on it now means you continue to be contradictory.

You made a bunch of hateful statements to the effect that McCallie isn't as hated as they think. (See if you can spot the problem with that logic.) You made a bunch of bigoted generalizations about the students and faculty, lumping them all into a "them" class, and then gave them a hard time for feeling like it was "us against them". (See if you can spot the problem with that logic.).

Other than that, I think you have me mistaken for someone else. I'm a fan of which ever QB gives us the best chance to win. I'm NOT a fan of bigots with inferiority complextes that think it OK to speak so freely about entire groups of people, as opposed to actually investing the time to judge people as individuals that stand or fall on their own actions.
